AUSTRALIA: CAMINO SALVADO PILGRIMAGE IN AUSTRALIA

ARCHDIOCESE OF CANBERRA-GOULBURN RELEASE: Keen pilgrim walkers from across the Archdiocese are invited to try out a new and improved version of the “Australian Camino”.

The Western Australian route, titled the Camino Salvado, is less physically demanding than its Spanish inspiration, stretching from Subiaco to New Norcia.

A number of people from the Archdiocese were among more than 60 pilgrims who completed the trek in 2010, and organisers hope they’ll return to walk one of the two eight-day pilgrimages scheduled for August and September.

The previous route detoured around sections where it was thought there were no trails. But with the help of a Lottery West grant for trail development, a long-forgotten uncharted road through Julimar State Forest has now been added to the route.

The Camino Salvado Committee has organised two walks this year, departing on 21 August and 4 September.

Cost is $800 for eight days, which includes all meals, accommodation and transport. Walkers carry only a small daypack and water, as baggage is transferred directly to the accommodation.

The Camino Salvado Committee is an ecumenical, non-profit community group, staffed by volunteers.
