Saint July 20 : St. Margaret of Antioch : Patron of #Pregnant , Child #Birth and #Nurses

Virgin and martyr; also called MARINA; belonged to Pisidian Antioch in Asia Minor, where her father was a pagan priest. Her mother dying soon after her birth, Margaret was nursed by a pious woman five or six leagues from Antioch. Having embraced Christianity and consecrated her virginity to God, she was disowned by her father and adopted by her nurse.
 While she was one day engaged in watching the flocks of her mistress, a lustful Roman prefect named Olybrius caught sight of her, and attracted by her great beauty sought to make her his concubine or wife. When neither cajolery nor threats of punishment could succeed in moving her to yield to his desires, he had her brought before him in public trial at Antioch. Threatened with death unless she renounced the Christian faith, the holy virgin refused to adore the gods of the empire and an attempt was made to burn her, but the flames, we are told in her Acts, left her unhurt. She was then bound hand and foot and thrown into a cauldron of boiling water, but at her prayer her bonds were broken and she stood up uninjured. Finally the prefect ordered her to be beheaded. The Greek Church honors her under the name Marine on 13 July; the Latin, as Margaret on 20 July. Her Acts place her death in the persecution of Diocletian (A.D. 303-5), but in fact even the century to which she belonged is uncertain. St. Margaret is represented in art sometimes as a shepherdess, or as leading a chained dragon, again carrying a little cross or a girdle in her hand, or standing by a large vessel which recalls the cauldron into which she was plunged. Relics said to belong to the saint are venerated in very many parts of Europe; at Rome, Montefiascone, Brusels, Bruges, Paris, Froidmont, Troyes, and various other places. Curiously enough this virgin has been widely venerated for many centuries as a special patron of women who are pregnant.

An Associated Press story that ran in the State Journal-Register July 7 is misleading in saying that Roman Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput in Philadelphia "is closing the door opened by Pope Francis to letting civilly remarried Catholics receive Communion, saying the faithful in his archdiocese can only do so if they abstain from sex and live 'as brother and sister.'"
As I explained in my statement about the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis on April 8, the date it was issued,
  "There are no changes to canon law or church doctrine introduced in this document." I addressed this conclusion in greater detail in my column in our diocesan newspaper, the Catholic Times, on May 1, explaining that in-flight press conferences on an airplane, apostolic exhortations and footnotes "by their very nature are not vehicles for introducing or amending legislative texts or making dogmatic pronouncements."
The Bible clearly teaches about the proper disposition to receive Holy Communion in the First Letter to the Corinthians, where Saint Paul wrote, "Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. Let a man examine himself, and so eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself (1 Cor 11:27-29). This biblical teaching is reflected in canons 915-916 of the Catholic Church's Code of Canon Law.
Thus, the Philadelphia guidelines issued by Archbishop Chaput are certainly correct when they say, "Every Catholic, not only the divorced and civilly-remarried, must sacramentally confess all serious sins of which he or she is aware, with a firm purpose to change, before receiving the Eucharist. . . . With divorced and civilly-remarried persons, Church teaching requires them to refrain from sexual intimacy. This applies even if they must (for the care of their children) continue to live under one roof. Undertaking to live as brother and sister is necessary for the divorced and civilly-remarried to receive reconciliation in the Sacrament of Penance, which could then open the way to the Eucharist."
This applies not only in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, but also here in the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, as it does elsewhere in the Church.
Catholics in these circumstances thus have a free choice: if they persist in sexual activity outside of valid marriage, they must refrain from taking Holy Communion; if they wish to receive Holy Communion, they must refrain from sexual activity outside of valid marriage. The latter may seem impossible to those steeped in our sex-saturated culture, but "with God, all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26).

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent his personal greetings to young people from throughout the world gathering in Krakow for World Youth Day and to all the people of the “beloved Polish nation” as he prepares to travel to Poland next week.
The Pope’s 15th apostolic journey abroad, from 27 to 31 July, will take him to Krakow where the 31st WYD is being held, to Czestochowa and to the former Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
    The 31st World Youth Day is fast approaching.  I look forward to meeting the young people from throughout the world gathered in Kraków and having the opportunity to meet the beloved Polish nation.  My entire visit will be inspired by Mercy during this Jubilee Year, and by the grateful and blessed memory of Saint John Paul II, who instituted the World Youth Days and was the guide of the Polish people in its recent historic journey towards freedom.
    Dear young people of Poland, I know that for some time now you have been preparing, especially with your prayers, for this great encounter in Kraków.  I thank you heartily for everything that you have done, and for the love with which you have done it.  Even now I embrace you and I bless you.
    Dear young people from throughout Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Oceania!  I also bless your countries, your hopes and your journey to Kraków, praying that it will be a pilgrimage of faith and fraternity.  May the Lord Jesus grant you the grace to experience personally his words: “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Mt 5:7).
    I am very anxious to meet you and to offer the world a new sign of harmony, a mosaic of different faces, from many races, languages, peoples and cultures, but all united in the name of Jesus, who is the Face of Mercy.
    I now turn to you, dear sons and daughters of the Polish nation!  For me, it is a great gift of the Lord to visit you.  You are a nation that throughout its history has experienced so many trials, some particularly difficult, and has persevered through the power of faith, upheld by the maternal hands of the Virgin Mary. I am certain that my pilgrimage to the shrine of Czestochowa will immerse me in this proven faith and do me so much good.  I thank you for your prayers in preparation for my visit.  I thank the bishops and priests, the men and women religious, and the lay faithful, especially families, to whom I will symbolically bring the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris Laetitia.  The moral and spiritual “health” of a nation is seen in its families.  That is why Saint John Paul II showed such great concern for engaged couples, young married couples and families.  Continue along this road!

#PopeFrancis “Testify to mercy, professing it and embodying it in life.” Special Message to #Dominicans

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis has sent a telegram to the Master General of the Order of Preachers – the Dominicans – who are currently holding the General Chapter of Priors Provincial in the central Italian city of Bologna.
The General Chapter of Priors General is the second of three specific kinds of General Chapters, each being held at three-year intervals for a 9-year cycle that ends with the election of a new Master General. The sequence begins with General Chapter of delegates – called “diffinitors” in Dominican parlance; then the General Chapter of Priors Provincial; and then, the Elective General Chapter.
This General Chapter of Priors Provincial is taking place in the context of the 800th anniversary of the confirmation of the Order under Pope Honorius III, and in the middle of the Jubilee Year of Mercy.
In his telegram, signed by the Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, Pope Francis expresses the hope that all Dominicans find the spiritual wherewithal to rededicate themselves to the charism and legacy of St Dominic their Founder, who was, “a tireless apostle of grace and forgiveness, compassionate towards the poor and an ardent defender of truth.” The Holy Father also calls on all Dominicans, saying, “Testify to mercy, professing it and embodying it in life.”Pope Francis’ telegram concludes with an exhortation to the whole Dominican family and all its members to be signs of the nearness and tenderness of God, that society might in this day rediscover the urgency of solidarity, love, and forgiveness.

Munich (AsiaNews) – The Afghan teenager who carried out an ax attack in Germany arrived in the country as a refugee. Placed with a German family, "he had not given any sign of radicalism".
In all likelihood his drift towards radical Islam "is due to Jihadi teachings and preachers on the Internet,” said Fr Samir Khalil Samir, a Jesuit scholar of Islam.
The clergyman is one of the foremost Christian experts of the Muslim world. Currently in Germany for work, he spoke toAsiaNews about the incident.
In his view, fear of Islamic terrorism should not be linked to refugees, but despair can overwhelm some who see no future for themselves.
Yesterday, around 9 pm (local time), a 17-year-old Afghan refugee armed with an axe and knife attacked people on a train near the town of Wurzburg (Bavaria), seriously wounding four people. Other people suffered minor injuries.
The attacker was killed as he tried to flee the scene. He had arrived in Germany about a year ago as an unaccompanied minor, and had lived at first in a refugee camp and then placed with a German couple.
“It is quite probable that this was an Islamist attack," said a spokesman for the Bavarian Interior Ministry.
Witnesses quoted by German media said they heard him shout "Allahu akbar" ("God is great") during the attack.
Last year, Germany opened its door to 1.1 million refugees, mostly Afghans and Syrians fleeing the war in their respective countries.
Unlike France, Belgium, and Great Britain, Germany has not had any major terrorist attacks, apart from one last May on a southern train where a 27-year-old man, armed with a knife, killed one person and injured three others.
In this case, the doctors said that the attacker was "unstable", although he too had shouted "Allah akbar" at the time of the attack.
Since she opened Germany’s borders, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has come in for blistering criticisms for her policy of openness to refugees.
Incidents like last night’s is sowing fear in the population about Islamic terrorists among the refugees. However, for Fr Samir, “the possibility of having terrorists among the refugees is minimal.”
“There is a refugee camp close to where I work,” he explained. “They are well accepted and are happy for the aid they receive from the state. Integration is also very good, especially through refugee children who go to school. Adults also get German lessons and civic education.”
“I believe that for this young man indoctrination came from the Internet. In Europe Jihadi preachers are more effective through social media than through direct relationship."
Still, "These incidents or attacks should not undermine our open door policy. The possibility that some terrorists may be among the refugees is minimal, almost zero. Saint July 19 : St. Arsenius the Great : #Hermit - #Anchorite

Anchorite; born 354, at Rome; died 450, at Troe, in Egypt. Theodosius the Great having requested the Emperor Gratian and Pope Damasus to find him in the West a tutor for his son Arcadius, they made choice of Arsenius, a man well read in Greek literature, member of a noble Roman family, and said to have been a deacon of the Roman Church. He reached Constantinople in 383, and continued as tutor in the imperial family for eleven years, during the last three of which he also had charge of his pupil's brother Honorius. Coming one day to see his children at their studies, Theodosius found them sitting while Arsenius talked to them standing. This he would not tolerate, and caused the teacher to sit and the pupils to stand. On his arrival at court Arsenius had been given a splendid establishment, and probably because the Emperor so desired, he lived in great pomp, but all the time felt a growing inclination to renounce the world. After praying long to be enlightened as to what he should do, he heard a voice saying "Arsenius, flee the company of men, and thou shalt be saved." Thereupon he embarked secretly for Alexandria, and hastening to the desert of Scetis, asked to be admitted among the solitaries who dwelt there. St. John the Dwarf, to whose cell he was conducted, though previously warned of the quality of his visitor, took no notice of him and left him standing by himself while he invited the rest to sit down at table. When the repast was half finished he threw down some bread before him, bidding him with an air of indifference eat if he would. Arsenius meekly picked up the bread and ate, sitting on the ground. Satisfied with this proof of humility, St. John kept him under his direction. The new solitary was from the first most exemplary yet unwittingly retained certain of his old habits, such as sitting cross-legged or laying one foot over the other. Noticing this, the abbot requested some one to imitate Arsenius's posture at the next gathering of the brethren, and upon his doing so, forthwith rebuked him publicly. Arsenius took the hint and corrected himself. During the fifty-five years of his solitary life he was always the most meanly clad of all, thus punishing himself for his former seeming vanity in the world. In like manner, to atone for having used perfumes at court, he never changed the water in which he moistened the palm leaves of which he made mats, but only poured in fresh water upon it as it wasted, thus letting it become stenchy in the extreme. Even while engaged in manual labour he never relaxed in his application to prayer. At all times copious tears of devotion fell from his eyes. But what distinguished him most was his disinclination to all that might interrupt his union with God. When, after long search, his place of retreat was discovered, he not only refused to return to court and act as adviser to his former pupil the Emperor Arcadius, but he would not even be his almoner to the poor and the monasteries of the neighbourhood. He invariably denied himself to visitors, no matter what their rank and condition and left to his disciples the care of entertaining them.
