Saint February 12 : St. Saturninus & Companions : Bishop & Martyr

BISHOP, MARTYR Saint Saturninus was a contemporary and a disciple of Our Lord Jesus Christ; he came to Palestine from Greece, attracted by the reputation of Saint John the Baptist, which had echoed even to the northern Mediterranean region. He then followed our Saviour, heard His teaching, and was a witness to many of His miracles. He was present in the Cenacle when the Holy Spirit descended at Pentecost upon the Mother of Christ, the Apostles and Disciples assembled in the number of 120. (Acts of the Apostles 1:15) He departed to teach Christianity under Saint Peter's authority, evangelizing the lands east of Palestine, and going as far as the region of the Persians and Medes and their neighboring provinces. He cured the sick, the lepers, and the paralytics and delivered souls from the demons; and before he left, he gave written instructions to the new Christians concerning what they should believe and practice.
When Saint Saturninus went with Saint Peter to Rome, the Apostle was inspired to send out a number of fervent evangelists to the West, to dissipate by the light of Christ the darkness in which those regions were still plunged. Saturninus was directed to go to what is now southern France, to Toulouse in particular. Saint Peter consecrated him a bishop, that he might form and ordain native priests for the future Christian churches of Gaul. He was given for his companion Papulus, later to become Saint Papulus the Martyr.
The two companions acquired at Nimes an ardent assistant in the person of Honestus. At Carcassonne, when the three announced Christ they were thrown into a prison, where they suffered from hunger; but an Angel was sent by the Lord to deliver them, and they continued on their way to Toulouse, preaching the doctrine and the name of Christ publicly. At this large and opulent city, where idolatry was entrenched, the idols became mute when the missionaries arrived. This caused great astonishment, and the cause of the silence was sought. Saint Saturninus in the meantime was working miracles which produced a strong impression on the witnesses; among them, the cure of a woman with advanced leprosy. The sign of the cross which he made over crowds often cured many sick persons at the same time, and he then baptized those who showed themselves ready for the sacrament. For a time he left his two disciples there and continued on elsewhere, preaching in the cities of what are now Auch and Eauze. A Spaniard heard of him and crossed the Pyrenees to hear him; this man, by the name of Paternus, advanced so rapidly on the paths of virtue that Saint Saturninus ordained him and then established him bishop of Eauze. He himself returned to Toulouse and sent Honestus to Spain to preach. When the latter returned to ask him to come with him to Spain, he left his disciple Papulus in charge for a time at Toulouse.
At Pampeluna his preaching brought thousands to the truth, delivering these former idolaters from the heavy yoke of the ancient enemy. While he continued his apostolic labors elsewhere, in Toulouse a persecution broke out against Papulus, and the faithful Christian obtained the crown of martyrdom by a violent death. At once Saint Saturnin returned to Toulouse, when he learned of it.
The idols again became mute. One day a great multitude was gathered near a pagan altar, where a bull stood ready for the sacrifice. A man in the crowd pointed out Saturninus, who was passing by, as the cause of the silence. There is the one who preaches everywhere that our temples must be torn down, and who dares to call our gods devils! It is his presence that imposes silence on our oracles! He was chained and dragged to the summit of the capitol, situated on a high hill, and commanded to offer sacrifice to the idols and cease to preach Jesus Christ. An Angel appeared to him to fortify him, and the terrible flagellation he endured could not alter his firmness. I know only one God, the only true one; to Him alone I will offer sacrifice on the altar of my heart... How can I fear gods who you yourselves say are afraid of me? He was tied by a rope to the bull, which was driven down the stairs leading to the capitol. His skull was broken, and the Saint entered into the beatitude of the unceasing vision of God. His body was taken up and buried by two devout young women. Tradition conserved the memory of the place of his burial, where later a church was built.

Wow Catholic Priest Stuns Audience with Impromtu Performance during Josh Groban Concert - Watch Video

A Catholic Eastern Rite, Chaldean Priest named, Fr. Patrick Setto, who is a big fan of singer Josh Groban, saw his performance at Caesars Windsor.

According to Caesars Windsor about 4,800 people attended the performance on Feb. 9, 2020.
Michigan resident Fr. Patrick Setto says he wasn't even sure he would be able to attend Josh Groban's Sunday concert at Caesar's Windsor.

A CBC report noted that Setto said he wanted to attend the show, a busy life got in the way for the Chaldean Catholic priest, so he put the concert to the side.

"My cousin found out that I really wanted to go, so she went ahead and bought tickets," said Fr. Setto, who also delivers sermons at Mother of God Church in Southfield, Mich. "I had no idea, she surprised me."

Fr. Setto said he prayed that he and his cousin would be able to meet Groban before the show.

"God [answered] my prayers and let me sing for him," Setto said.

Fr. Setto also  performs in a praise and worship band.

When Groban gave the mic to the crowd Father Patrick Setto performed a rendition of Josh Groban's "To Where You Are."
Watch Fr. Setto perform "To Where you Are" in front of Josh Groban and a Caesars Windsor audience:

"He was listening to the crowd," said Fr. Setto. "So my cousin looks over and goes, 'Just say I want to sing with you, just scream it out.'"

Fr. Setto's performance was captured on video and uploaded to YouTube and social media, where it's gne viral.

As the footage shows, Fr. Setto's performance astonished both the audience and Groban himself.

"You just gave me a nice little break, Patrick," joked Groban, after Fr. Setto returned the mic. "When I come back here in a year, I'm going to be playing in the bar and I'm going to be seeing posters for Patrick."

An audience member later says something to Groban, who asked, "You're a Catholic priest?"

"I've always thought his personality is really down to the Earth," said Setto. "He's a simple guy, he's funny, he knows how to relate to people, and I think his music … has a spiritual message. Whether he intended that or not, the music has got an almost supernatural touch to it."

Cardinal Reinhard Marx will Step down as Chairman of German Bishops' Conference - Full Text

Cardinal Marx will give up chairing the German Bishops' Conference. For the first time, a chairman of the bishops' conference has the opportunity to be re-elected. Cardinal Marx, however, no longer wants to compete. Now a new chairman will be elected at the beginning of March.

Full Text - Release from the Bishops' Conference of Germany:
Spring General Assembly of the German Bishops' Conference: Election of the Chairman
The spring general assembly of the German Bishops' Conference will take place in Mainz from March 2nd to 5th, 2020. The election of the chairman of the German Bishops' Conference is also planned.

The acting chairman, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, wrote a letter to the members of the German Bishops' Conference on this occasion. This letter states:

“The year 2020 is progressing and so is the view of the agenda and the scheduling for this and the coming year. This also applies to the obligations of the chairman of the German Bishops' Conference. I therefore think it is right to clarify before the election of the chairperson at the spring general assembly that I am not available for a possible second term.

It has been clear to me for some time. My idea is that at the end of a possible second term of office, I would be 72 years old, and then the end of my role as Archbishop of Munich and Freising will also be close. I think it should be the turn of the younger generation. And maybe it is also good if there is a change in this task more often. I was very happy to hold the office of chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, but 'everything has its time' (Kohelet).

Of course, I will continue to work actively in the Episcopal Conference and will be particularly committed to the Synodal Way, which I think has started well. At the same time, I would like to have a stronger presence in the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, especially in the comprehensive strategy process that we want to start this year. "

#BreakingNews Coronavirus Death Toll is now over 1000 with 42,708 People Infected

Coronavirus: over 1000 dead; 108 yesterday
AsiaNews Report by Wang Zhicheng
Yesterday the deadliest day since last January. Several Wuhan health authorities resign, replaced by authorities sent from Beijing. The appearance, with a mask, of Xi Jinping. The collapse of Wuhan hospital facilities. Two other doctors suffer the same fate as Li Wenliang: silenced by the police for having raised the alarm on the epidemic.

Beijing (AsiaNews) - The death toll from the coronavirus epidemic spreading in China has reached 1017 victims. There were 108 deaths yesterday, the highest number in a single day since the first victim recorded last January.

Health authorities confirm that there were 42,708 people infected until yesterday evening; the suspected cases are 21,675. 3998 people have been successfully treated so far.

Yesterday, after a long period of silence, President Xi Jinping reappeared, visiting a hospital in the capital where patients affected by the virus are interned . Wearing a surgical mask, he ensured "more decisive measures" to combat the virus and the confidence that "we will win this battle against the epidemic".

A showdown has begun in the party over the way the emergency has been addressed. Yesterday, national television broadcast the news of the resignation of Zhang Lin and Liu Yingzi, respectively secretary and director of the Hubei Health Commission. They will be replaced by Wang Hesheng, deputy head of the National Health Commission. The head of the Health Commission of Huanggang, the second city after Wuhan, was also fired for the number of infected and the deputy head of the Red Cross of Wuhan, responsible for having curbed the distribution of medical material to hospitals, perhaps for reasons of profit.

Operations management in the epicenter region of the virus has been entrusted to Chen Yixin, secretary general of the Central Commission for Political and Legal Affairs. Chen is a Xi Jinping protégé, his appointment should also serve to curb criticism of the president.

Meanwhile, angry comments over the way police silenced Dr. Li Wenliang, who first raised the alarm about the virus and who died on 6 February of coronavirus, continue to populate the web. Web users continue to demand public apologies from government authorities. At the entrance to the central hospital in Wuhan, where he practiced and where he died, there is a catafalque with his photo, where people stop to honor him by bowing.

The media reported the testimonies of at least two other Wuhan doctors who raised the alarm about the disease, but were threatened and silenced by the police. They are Xie Linka, from the Union Hospital Cancer Center, and Liu Wen, from the neurology department of the Red Cross hospital.

Although the criticisms are directed more towards the police and local authorities, the mayor of Wuhan, Zhou Xianwang said that some central authorities are also responsible for the situation. While offering his resignation, days ago he specified that as a mayor he could not raise the alarm on the epidemic without being authorized by Beijing.

In Wuhan and Hubei, the situation is always very dramatic: there is no medical equipment, protective suits, surgical masks, beds. As soon as beds are freed by the discharge of some patients, they are immediately occupied. Many coronavirus patients are not accepted because there are no places left in the hospitals.

4 Catholic Bishops, critical of Duerte, Cleared of Sedition charges by Government in the Philippines

CBCP release:
“God knows everything,” said Archbishop Socrates Villegas after the dismissal of sedition charges brought against him and other church leaders.

They have steadfastly maintained their innocence, and “God knows all we think in our hearts,” he said.

“Now that the government officials have seen the falsity of the charges, what can we do but pray as I have always been doing. I pray even more,” Villegas said.

“I pray for those who concocted the calumnies and lies and wish them peace,” he said. “My revenge is forgiveness for my slanderers who relentlessly mock me.”

The Department of Justice cleared Villegas, Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, Bishop Honesto Ongtioco and Bishop Teodoro Bacani over an alleged plot to overthrow President Duterte.

The DOJ also dropped the same charges against Fr. Robert Reyes but charged Jesuit Fr. Albert Alejo, Fr. Flavie Villanueva and nine others of “conspiracy to commit sedition”.

“I pray for those who have been charged, I know the Lord will turn your anxieties into hope. Do not be afraid,” Villegas added.

One of the 36 people charged, Bishop David hailed the development but admitted having mixed emotions about the DOJ decision that was made public on Monday.

The prelate said he is “happy” that they were cleared of the charges brought against them but also “sad” that the DOJ indicted two priests and nine others for the supposed ouster plot.

“I still hope and pray that the charges against them be also dismissed soon by the courts,” David said.

For Bishop Bacani, the no-probable-cause decision “was only right and long overdue”.

“I thank our lawyers and the panel of prosecutors for upholding the truth,” he said.

“I thank you for all your prayers and support,” Bishop Ongtioco also said.

Novena to Our Lady of Lourdes and Litany - Special Prayers to Mary Immaculate

NOVENA
Preliminary Prayer to be said each day
Be blessed, O most pure Virgin, for having vouchsafed to manifest your shining with life, sweetness and beauty, in the Grotto of Lourdes, saying to the child, St. Bernadette: "I am the Immaculate Conception." A thousand times we congratulate you upon your Immaculate Conception. And now, O ever Immaculate Virgin, Mother of mercy, Health of the sick, Refuge of sinners, Comforter of the afflicted, you know our wants, our troubles, our sufferings; deign to cast upon us a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favors, and already many have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and physical. We come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain for us, O loving Mother, the granting of our request. (mention your request) Through gratitude for your favors, we will endeavor to imitate your virtues, that we may one day share your glory.
Our Lady of Lourdes, Mother of Christ, you had influence with your Divine son while upon earth. You have the same influence now in Heaven. Pray for us; obtain for us from your Divine Son our special requests if it be the Divine Will. Amen.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
   Saint Bernadette, pray for us.
DAY ONE   O Mary Immaculate, Our Lady of Lourdes, virgin and mother, queen of heaven, chosen from all eternity to be the Mother of the Eternal Word and in virtue of this title preserved from original sin, we kneel before you as did little Bernadette at Lourdes and pray with childlike trust in you that as we contemplate your glorious appearance at Lourdes, you will look with mercy on our present petition and secure for us a favorable answer to the request for which we are making this novena. (mention your request)
O Brilliant star of purity, Mary Immaculate, Our Lady of Lourdes, glorious assumption, triumphant in your coronation, show unto us the mercy of the Mother of God, Virgin Mary, Queen and Mother, be our comfort, hope, strength, and consolation. Amen.

   Saint Bernadette, pray for us.

DAY TWO   Be blessed, O most pure Virgin, for having vouchsafed to manifest yourself shining with light, sweetness and beauty, in the Grotto of Lourdes, saying to the child Saint Bernadette: "I am the Immaculate Conception!" O Mary Immaculate, inflame our hearts with one ray of the burning love of your pure heart. Let them be consumed with love for Jesus and for you, in order that we may merit one day to enjoy your glorious eternity. O dispenser of His graces here below, take into your keeping and present to your Divine Son the petition for which we are making this novena. (mention your request)

Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
   Saint Bernadette, pray for us.

DAY THREE   "You are all fair, O Mary, and there is in you no stain of original sin." O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. O brilliant star of sanctity, as on that lovely day, upon a rough rock in Lourdes you spoke to the child Bernadette and a fountain broke from thee plain earth and miracles happened and the great shrine of Lourdes began, so now I beseech you to hear our fervent prayer and do, we beseech you, grant us the petition we now so earnestly seek.
Amen.
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
   Saint Bernadette, pray for us.

DAY FOUR   O Immaculate Queen of Heaven, we your wayward, erring children, join our unworthy prayers of praise and thanksgiving to those of the angels and saints and your own the One, Holy, and Undivided Trinity may be glorified in heaven and on earth. Our Lady of Lourdes, as you looked down with love and mercy upon Bernadette as she prayed her rosary in the grotto, look down now, we beseech you, with love and mercy upon us. From the abundance of graces granted you by your Divine Son, sweet Mother of God, give to each of us all that your motherly heart sees we need and at this moment look with special favor on the grace we seek in this novena. (mention your request)

(mention your request)
O Lady of Bernadette, with the stars of heaven in your hair and the roses of earth at your feet, look with compassion upon us today as you did so long ago on Bernadette in the Grotto of Lourdes.
O Brilliant star of purity, Mary Immaculate, Our Lady of Lourdes, glorious assumption, triumphant in your coronation, show unto us the mercy of the Mother of God, Virgin Mary, Queen and Mother, be our comfort, hope, strength, and consolation. Amen.

And, O most gracious Mother Mary, beloved Mother of Our Lord and Redeemer, look with favor upon us as you did that day on Bernadette and intercede with Him for us that the favor we now so earnestly seek may be granted to us.
Amen
Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us.
   Saint Bernadette, pray for us.

DAY EIGHT   O Immaculate Mother of God, from heaven itself you came to appear to the little Bernadette in the rough Grotto of Lourdes! And as Bernadette knelt at your feet and the magic spring burst forth and as multitudes have knelt ever since before your shrine, O Mother of God, we kneel before you today to ask that in your mercy you plead with your Divine Son to grant the special favor we seek in this novena.
Amen.

Today°s Mass Readings and Video : Tuesday, February 11, 2020 - #Eucharist with Bishop Bergie

Tuesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
Lectionary: 330

Reading 11 KGS 8:22-23, 27-30

Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD
in the presence of the whole community of Israel,
and stretching forth his hands toward heaven,
he said, “LORD, God of Israel,
there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below;
you keep your covenant of mercy with your servants
who are faithful to you with their whole heart.
“Can it indeed be that God dwells on earth?
If the heavens and the highest heavens cannot contain you,
how much less this temple which I have built!
Look kindly on the prayer and petition of your servant, O LORD, my God,
and listen to the cry of supplication which I, your servant,
utter before you this day.
May your eyes watch night and day over this temple,
the place where you have decreed you shall be honored;
may you heed the prayer which I, your servant, offer in this place.
Listen to the petitions of your servant and of your people Israel
which they offer in this place.
Listen from your heavenly dwelling and grant pardon.”

Responsorial Psalm84:3, 4, 5 AND 10, 11

R.    (2)  How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
My soul yearns and pines
for the courts of the LORD.
My heart and my flesh
cry out for the living God.
R.    How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Even the sparrow finds a home,
 and the swallow a nest
in which she puts her young—
Your altars, O LORD of hosts,
my king and my God!
R.    How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
Blessed they who dwell in your house!
continually they praise you.
O God, behold our shield,
and look upon the face of your anointed.
R.    How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!
I had rather one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I had rather lie at the threshold of the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
R.    How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!

AlleluiaPS 119:36, 29B

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Incline my heart, O God, to your decrees;
and favor me with your law.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.

GospelMK 7:1-13

When the Pharisees with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem
gathered around Jesus,
they observed that some of his disciples ate their meals
with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
(For the Pharisees and, in fact, all Jews,
do not eat without carefully washing their hands,
keeping the tradition of the elders.
And on coming from the marketplace
they do not eat without purifying themselves.
And there are many other things that they have traditionally observed,
the purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds.)
So the Pharisees and scribes questioned him,
“Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders
but instead eat a meal with unclean hands?”
He responded,
“Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites,
as it is written:
This people honors me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me;
In vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines human precepts.
You disregard God’s commandment but cling to human tradition.”
He went on to say,
“How well you have set aside the commandment of God
in order to uphold your tradition!
For Moses said,
Honor your father and your mother,
and Whoever curses father or mother shall die.
Yet you say,
‘If someone says to father or mother,
“Any support you might have had from me is qorban”’
(meaning, dedicated to God),
you allow him to do nothing more for his father or mother.
You nullify the word of God
in favor of your tradition that you have handed on.
And you do many such things.”
