Morón (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishop of the Diocese of Morón, Mgr. Jorge Vázquez, expressed his "profound sadness" regarding the murder of 80-year-old Ernesto Cavazza, a parishioner and lay person involved in the life of the parish of Santa Monica. "The news shocked me, like everyone else", he said in a letter to the diocesan community sent to Fides. "I want to bring my message of support and closeness to his family and to the whole community of Santa Monica. I cry with you" he wrote, adding: "The holy faithful people of Morón need pastors, priests and lay people like Ernesto to walk together, to proclaim Christ's hope to the Church".
Ernesto Cavazza was part of the economic council of the parish of Santa Monica in Villa Sarmiento and his duties included opening the doors of the church for the first mass of the day. Last Sunday, June 30th, in fulfilling his task, Cavazza arrived at the parish by car just before 10am. He got out of the car and was intercepted by three men who attacked him, probably with the intention to take his car or rob in the church. It seems that Ernesto resisted, so the criminals shot him. Transferred to a hospital in the area, he died shortly after while undergoing surgery. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 3/7/2019)
