Pope Francis Accepts Bishop's Rejection of Cardinalate to Prevent Victims of Abuse from Being Hurt

Emeritus bishop Luc Van Looy receives dispensation cardinalate
JUNE 16, 2022 -
Press Release from the Bishops' Conference of Belgium:
Cardinal Jozef De Kesel and the bishops of our country appreciate the decision of Mgr. Van Looy.
In addition to a lot of positive reaction, the news of the cardinal creation of emeritus bishop of Ghent Luc Van Looy was also criticized. More specifically, that as bishop of Ghent (from 2004 to 2020), he would not have always acted decisively against abuse in a pastoral relationship.
To prevent victims of such abuse by his cardinalate from being hurt again, Msgr. Van Looy asked Pope Francis to dispense with him from accepting the appointment as cardinal. Pope Francis has responded favorably to this.
Cardinal Jozef De Kesel and the bishops of our country appreciate the decision of Mgr. Van Looy. On this occasion, they reiterate their commitment to continue the fight against all forms of abuse in the Catholic Church. The interests of the victims and their families always come first.
