Polish Bishops' Conference Release:
Ukraine is their homeland, they live in Poland and now they are on their way to Rome for the 10th World Meeting of Families which starts on June 22nd. Tatiana Korczyński carries their ninth child in her womb. “Aid to Ukraine in the form of arms shipments is fine, but prayer is the most important thing. God can perform a miracle at any moment,” says Włodzimierz Korczyński.
We spoke a day after Włodzimierz Korczyński when he returned from Ukraine after another humanitarian mission. He says his life was changed by the experience on Maidan Square, where pro-EU protesters were massacred by the security forces of pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014. “These events radically changed the way I approached everything, even my attitude toward my family,” Korczyński recalls. Before, he adds, work and responsibilities came first. “Then the changes began. We realized that family is the most important thing to us. You cannot raise children through strangers. A child needs your love; You have to be close and be a role model. No one and nothing can replace that." In February I was ready for anything. The very next day I went to Ukraine with humanitarian aid. Ukraine is calling me! I want to be there and serve others”
The Korczyńskis were invited to take part in the World Meeting of Families by Father Leszek Kryża, head of the Polish Bishops' Conference's “Support Team for the Eastern Church”. The couple emphasizes that the trip and the opportunity to pray for peace is a blessing but also a responsibility for them. "It will be a great honor for me and my family to represent Ukraine, to be with families from all over the world and to pray for peace in my homeland (...). God can perform a miracle at any time, He can convert Russia,” explains Korczyński.
Despite the experience of Russian aggression against their homeland, the couple does not lose hope. They ask for prayers and take every opportunity to express their gratitude for the support that Poles are offering to them and their fellow countrymen suffering from the war.
Pope Francis will host the 10th World Meeting of Families in Rome. The Holy Father will welcome the participants on June 22nd in the Paul VI Hall. greet. On Saturday 25 June he will celebrate Holy Mass in St. Peter's Square. On the agenda of the meeting in Rome are a family festival, a pastoral congress and conferences on the life of Catholic families, parental responsibilities and conjugal love.
