Pope Francis Sends Greeting to President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella Amid Resignation of Italy's Prime Minister

Pope Francis sent the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, his best wishes as he marks his 81st birthday on July 23rd. The greetings came in a telegram sent soon after Italy’s Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned, after serving just over 1 year. This was due to the collapse of his “unity” coalition in Parliament. Italy will therefore hold an early national election on September 25. Pope Francis, in July 2020, appointed Mario Draghi as an ordinary academicians of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.
