#BreakingNews Machete Attack of 2 Catholic Churches Leaves Sacristan Dead and a Priest Injured in Spain



Police have detained a man named Yasine Kanjaa, age 25, from Morocco, who attacked two churches with a machete, in Algeciras, Spain. A sacristan was killed during the attack of the two nearby churches. The Algeciras town hall identified the sexton (sacristan) as Diego Valencia (see picture below) and the wounded priest as Antonio Rodríguez. A priest was injured; they have operated on him and he is stable condition.

This is according to the Salesian community of the priest, who is about 73 years old, and very dear to his community. 3 others were injured in the attack. The parish San Isidro and Our Lady of Palma in Algeciras, Spain, were attacked on Wednesday, January 25th. 
The government is investigating it as a terror attack.
The President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, wrote:
I want to convey my most sincere condolences to the relatives of the sacristan who died in the terrible attack in Algeciras. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured. All our support for the work being carried out by the State Security Forces and Bodies.

Given the events that occurred this afternoon, January 25, in the parish of Nuestra Señora de La Palma and in the chapel of San Isidro de Algeciras, in which one person was killed and several injured, we want, first of all, convey our closeness and affection and the consolation of faith to the families of the victims, to the diocese of Cádiz and to the society of Campo de Gibraltar.
Bishop Rafael Zornoza, Bishop of Cádiz and Ceuta, expresses his condolences and condemns the events.
We also express our firmest condemnation of all forms of violence, which cannot take place in the society in which we live.
As believers, we ask the God of mercy and peace to fill the hearts of the victims with hope and heal the wounded, accompany the Church and society in the search for peace and convert the hearts of violent people.
STATEMENT OF THE SALESIAN COMMUNITY OF ALGECIRAS In view of the events that occurred this afternoon, from the Casa Salesiana de Algeciras we communicate that the Salesian Antonio Rodríguez Lucena, parochial vicar of the María Auxiliadora Parish, who was celebrating the Eucharist at 7:00 p.m. in the San Isidro chapel, He has been wounded with a knife by an attack that took place inside the temple. The National Police have arrested an individual after identifying him as the alleged perpetrator of the attacks carried out in the temples of San Isidro, La Palma and the chapel of Europe. At this time, the 74-year-old Salesian is stable in gravity thanks to the rapid action of the medical teams. We appreciate the attention, as well as the many displays of affection and the messages asking about his situation. In the next few hours, the evolution of him after the intervention to which he will be subjected after the injuries received will be reported. We ask for an effort to avoid the dissemination of unverified information so as not to generate an even greater state of alarm. Let's pray for him and for his speedy recovery. From the Salesian community we unite in prayer in these moments of sadness and we want to show our condolences for the death of the sacristan Diego Valencia, at the same time that we condemn the events that occurred.
