After expelling a community of Jesuit priests from their private residence close to the Central American University (UCA) in Managua, and confiscating the university, on Wednesday, 23 August, Nicaraguan authorities banned the entire Society of Jesus from the country and ordered the confiscation of all its assets, claiming the religious order had failed to comply with tax reporting. Statement from the Central American Jesuits:
The State of Nicaragua through the Ministry of Governance, through Ministerial Agreement N. 105-2023 published today, canceled the legal personality of the Association Company of Jesus in Nicaragua and established that the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic transfers to the State the real estate and furniture of it.
The decision was made without taking into account the administrative procedures established by law. As happened in most of the more than three thousand similar cases of cancellation of legal personality carried out by the regime since 2018, this agreement was carried out without giving opportunity to legitimate defense by the Jesuits and without having a impartial judiciary to judge and stop these totally unjustified and arbitrary abuses of power. Already prior to the publication of Ministerial Agreement N. 105-2023, the Government had taken from the Association Company of Jesus of Nicaragua one of its properties: the residence where some of its members lived in Managua. On this occasion, in addition to the occupation of the building, his residents were evicted without giving them reasonable time to collect and take their personal belongings.
The Central America Province of the Company of Jesus:
1. Condemn this new aggression against Nicaragua Jesuits. It considers it framed in a national context of systematic repression categorized as "crimes against humanity" by the expert group on Human Rights on Nicaragua formed by the United Nations.
2. He confirms that all this is directed at the full establishment of a totalitarian regime.
3. Holds the President and the current Vice President of Nicaragua responsible for being, at least, co-honest these facts and preventing the existence of conditions of independence and neutrality of the judicial power that allow him to take measures to stop, reverse and sanction them.
4. Ask the presidential couple:
• Stop the repression.
• Accept the search for a rational solution in which truth, justice, dialogue, respect for human rights, the rule of law prevails.
• Respect the freedom and total integrity of the Jesuits and the people who collaborate with them or with whom they collaborate.
5. Join the thousands of Nicaraguan victims who are waiting for justice and repair for the damage the current Nicaraguan government is causing.
6. She is grateful for the countless signs of recognition, support and solidarity she has received in the face of these growing incidents.
