Pope Francis Meets Privately with US General Mark Milley at the Vatican and Blesses his Rosaries - VIDEO

Pope Francis met, privately, with U.S. General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at the Vatican on August 21, 2023.

The encounter occurred in the pope's study at the Apostolic Palace. General Milley is a Catholic, and the U.S.'s highest-ranking military officer. He is the principal military adviser to the president, secretary of defense, and National Security Council.
As is customary, General Milley and Pope Francis exchanged gifts. The Pope Francis blessed some rosaries brought by the general and gifted him a sculpture with the phrase, in Italian, "Peace is a fragile flower." The general's wife, Hollyanne Haas, was present in the general's delegation, which included U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See Joe Donnelly.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson's statement said the pope and the general "discussed the unprovoked and ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and exchanged perspectives and assessments. The chairman [Milley] reaffirmed unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity." The audience was significant since the Vatican has been focusing on a peace-building mission with Ukraine, led by Italian Cardinal Mario Zuppi. Carding Zuppi has traveled to both Kyiv in Ukraine, and Moscow in Russia, also visited Washington, D.C., meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden in July.
