Happy 100th Birthday Sister Irene! Nun's Special Wish at 100 who Entered Religious Life 60 Years Ago in France!

Sister Irene celebrated her 100th birthday!
On Saturday February 3, 2024, a Catholic Cistercian nun Sister Irène celebrated her 100th birthday, including 60 of monastic life spent at the Notre-Dame de Bonne-Espérance abbey in Echourgnac, France...
While the community is still only in its 100 years of existence, another centenary has just been celebrated, that of Sister Irène. Originally from Strasbourg, Sister Irène made her first commitment as a nun on April 7, 1964, in Echourgnac. She was then 40 years old. Five years later, on January 8, 1969, she made solemn profession.
The tour of France on a moped (electric bike)!
Before entering the monastery, Sister Irène had a habit: taking advantage of her rest to travel across France on a moped in search of beauty. “My holidays were spent walking, on a moped, touring France with beautiful things to see,” she remembers with a laugh. “There is so much beauty in our home. There are things that are ignored. For example, all the monuments of Romanesque art, the churches... There is a treasure, a treasure! » Before concluding with humor, “in the future I will not continue!” »
“Sister Irène always had an easy retort and a lot of humor in her answers,” says Sister Denis. It doesn't leave her, whatever her age, even if her hearing is less good! »
One hundred years celebrated in the community
For several months, even though she is doing well, Sister Irène has been living in La Puye, in an EHPAD run by the Daughters of the Cross, the community not having the possibility of ensuring its quality of daily life at the monastery.
Sister Irene is not forgotten, however. The community also came to celebrate her birthday with her, preparing sauerkraut for her, a typical dish from her region of origin to which she is very fond.
An anchored vocation
Within the monastery, Sister Irene had an activity that she particularly liked, taking care of the chickens. “I really liked my casseroles, they were in good hands,” she smiles.
As for the religious vocation, “I always knew that was it. Little by little it crept into my life. » After 60 years of life given to Christ, Jesus is still the same for her: “Jesus? It’s Jesus, she pronounces simply, in a soft and affectionate voice. There is no explanation. It is the Son of God, it is Jesus. He will give me explanations when I get up there. »
The Special WISH Moreover, if we ask her what to wish her for her birthday, the answer comes: “Eternal life!” When Jesus wants! »
