Historic Catholic Church is Destroyed by Fire in Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne, France

This Thursday, March 14, 2024, a fire broke out in the attic of the parish church of Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne. In the middle of the day the firefighters intervened, deploying a very large device. The flames had already propagated throughout the framework which was completely destroyed, taking away the vaults of the church. This “reconstruction” building, partly Art-deco style, is a warm and well-maintained building, benefiting from the light diffused by splendid colored stained glass windows. They seem to have been spared from the fire. The bishop wrote, in the evening I was able to go there to greet Father Gérard Randriarsoa, pastor of the Saint-Pierre parish. Saint-Paul des Trois Rivières, as well as parishioners and firefighters. The Blessed Sacrament was placed security, as well as works of art .
The scale of the fire renders the church completely out of use pending the major work which will be carried out as necessary for its restoration.
To all the inhabitants of Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne, as well as to the members of the parish community, I express my deep sadness, our emotion is strong. I express my deep gratitude to the Mayor of Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne, Mr. Lionel Pierrot, as well as the members of the municipal council for their responsiveness. I ask the Catholics of the diocese of Aisne to support with their prayer the pain of each one, and the effort that they will be necessary for the reconstruction of this beautiful building. + Renauld de Dinechin, Bishop of Soissons, Laon and Saint Quentin
