Pope Leo XIV Appoints Cardinal Reina to Head John Paul II Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Replacing Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia


The Holy See released that Pope Leo XIV made an appointment of the Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and Family
The Holy Father has appointed as Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute for the Sciences of Marriage and Family the Most Eminent Lord Cardinal Baldassare Reina, Vicar General of His Holiness for the Diocese of Rome and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Lateran University; he succeeds Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia.
The cardinal succeeds Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia, who turned 80 on April 21.

On August 15, 2016, Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Paglia Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute.

The Institute was founded with the Apostolic Letter in the form of Motu Proprio of Pope Francis Summa familiae cura of 8 September 2017, replacing the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family which had been established by the Apostolic Constitution Magnum Matrimonii Sacramentum of 7 October 1982. On 11 July 2019, the then Congregation for Catholic Education then approved the statutes and program of studies of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute.

The Theological Institute has a central headquarters in Rome, and seven foreign sections in the United States (Washington DC), Mexico (México DF, Guadalajara and Monterrey), Spain (with two distinct headquarters, one in Valencia and the other in Madrid), Brazil (Salvador de Bahia), Benin (Cotonou), India (Changanacherry, Kerala) as well as associated centers in Lebanon (Beirut), the Philippines (Bacolod) and the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo).
Higher education center

It is the only higher education center entirely dedicated to theological studies and the sciences of marriage and family, and collaborates with the Dicastery for the Laity, Family and Life to promote a common direction in studies on marriage, family and life, also through training courses and opportunities for exchange with the global network of family movements.
