Vatican Releases Official Portrait of the New Pope Leo XIV


The Vatican the has released the Official Portrait of the New Pope Leo XIV. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, O.S.A., Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, age 69, was elected by the 2025 Conclave cardinals on Thursday, May 8th, as the 267th pontiff of the Universal Catholic Church. 5 Interesting Facts about Pope Leo XIV's life -

1. Pope Leo XIV is the 1st North American Pope. But the 2nd from the Americas as Pope Francis was from South America. Leo means lion; but named himself after Pope Leo XIII.
2. He was born in Chicago but spent many years in Peru and became a bishop there. He gained dual Peruvian and US citizenship.
3. His is the 1st member of the Augustinian Order, to have been elected pope. However, he is the 7th pope following the Rule of St. Augustine. (UPDATE)
4. His father of Italian and French heritage, was a US Navy veteran who fought in WW2. His mother, of Spanish and Creole heritage, was a librarian. He has 2 brothers; John and Louis.
5. He was created cardinal by Pope Francis in 2023 and speaks five languages: English, Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese
