In one of the world's deadliest plane crashes in history, nearly 300 were killed Air India flight 171 which took off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, June 12, with 242 people aboard, was bound for London Gatwick Airport. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a residential building in the area near the airport soon after takeoff, reportedly into the state-run B.J. Medical College hostel, a residence for doctors. At least 265 bodies have been brought to the city civil hospital following the tragic crash of the London-bound Air India flight in Ahmedabad on Thursday afternoon, according to police.
“We’ve received information that 265 bodies have reached the hospital,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai while speaking to reporters.
Pope Leo XIV sent a message on Thursday to express his “heartfelt condolences” to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the crash.
In a telegram signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Pope said "Deeply saddened by the tragedy involving an Air India aircraft near Ahmedabad, his holiness Pope Leo Xiv sends his heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives, together with the assurance of prayers for all involved in the recovery efforts. commending the souls of the deceased to the mercy of the almighty, his holiness invokes upon all affected the divine blessings of healing and peace."
The Air India plane was carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian. Passengers included 217 adults, 11 children, and 2 infants, according to Reuters news agency.
Rescue workers were at the scene shortly after the crash, and video showed stretchers transporting the injured.
Indian Prime Minister Nahrendra Modi said of the crash “The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected."
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement "Today is a truly heartbreaking day for many British and Indian families up and down the country. I want to extend my heartfelt sympathies to all those impacted by the horrific plane crash."
Britain has close ties with India, and nearly 1.9 million people of Indian descent live in the country, according to the 2021 United Kingdom census.
