The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV, has appointed as Auxiliary Bishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul, Korea, the Rev. Fr. Matthew Kwang-Hee Choi, currently Director of the Department of Culture and Communication and Spokesperson for the same ecclesiastical circumscription, assigning him the titular see of Elefantaria di Mauritania. Curriculum vitae
HE Msgr. Matthew Kwang-Hee Choi was born on September 21, 1977 in Seoul. He studied Philosophy and Theology at the Catholic University of Korea, obtaining a Licentiate in Theology.
He was ordained a priest on July 2, 2004 for the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul.
He has held the following positions and completed further studies: Parish Vicar of Mook-dong and Shingsa-dong in Seoul (2004-2007); Licentiate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (2008-2012); Pastoral ministry at the Catholic Youth Biblical Group (2013-2020); Formator in the St. Peter Formation Program for young priests of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul (since 2020); Deputy Director of the St. Imbert Spiritual Exercises Center in Seoul (2021-2023).
Since 2023 he has been: Director of the Department of Culture and Communication of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul; Member of the Presbyteral Council; Secretary of the Commission for Public Relations; Member of the Commission for Missions Abroad; Member of the Archdiocesan Council; Member of the Onggi Scholarship Society ; Member of the Commission for the Approval of Private Associations of Lay Apostolate; Member of the Commission for the Causes of Saints; Vice President of the Diocesan Commission for Mass Media ; Director of the Academy of Catholic Art; Director of the 1898 Gallery; Head of the Association of Catholic Journalists; Head of Signis Korea .
Since 2024, he has been Spokesperson for the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Seoul and Head of External Relations for the organization of World Youth Day Seoul 2027 , while, since 2025, he has been a Member of the Board of Directors of the John Paul II Foundation for Youth .
