Pope Leo XIV thanks papal legate following a resolution to the situation within the Syro-Malabar Church in Kerala, India. A statement from the Dicastery for the Eastern Churches reports on the "heartfelt gratitude" expressed by Leo XIV to Monsignor Cyril Vasil', Archbishop of Košice of the Byzantines, who concluded his term as papal delegate.
In 2023, Pope Francis entrusted the delegate with the mission of restoring peace to a community divided over liturgical issues. And today, according to the Dicastery for the Oriental Churches, Leo XIV expressed his sincere gratitude for the work done by the Archbishop-Bishop of Košice of the Byzantines, Kyr Cyril Vasil', upon concluding his mission as papal delegate for liturgical matters for the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly of the Syro-Malabars.
Vatican News released that the Jesuit prelate had first gone to the archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly in August 2023, representing Pope Bergoglio, to try to resolve a long-standing dispute over the unique way of celebrating the Holy Qurbana , the Mass of local tradition. The agreement reached then—which led the Syro-Malabar Synod to establish the implementation of the Holy Qurbana by the end of 2021—was accepted by 34 archeparchies, except for that of Ernakulam-Angamaly, which determined the situation of division on which Pope Francis intervened in a first letter in March 2022.
The second mission
After his first mission in December 2023, Monsignor Vasil' returned to the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese for a second time to continue his mediation work, despite a climate of great tension that had already led to the papal delegate being attacked by some faithful, who went so far as to throw objects at him and burn photos of the then Cardinal Prefect of the Eastern Churches, Leonardo Sandri. Shortly before his second departure for India, on December 7, 2023, Pope Francis himself decided to intervene again to calm things down, this time with a video message, inviting them to address the matter while preserving communion.
Maintain unity
Then, in January 2024, Francis confirmed the election of the new Archbishop of Ernakulam-Angamaly, Raphael Thattil—who had replaced Cardinal Alencherry—and later, in May, he received in audience representatives of the ancient Indian Church, invited once again to "guard unity."
