This is the first meeting with Leo XIV, the fourth with a Pontiff since his election twenty-five years ago. Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, was received by the Pope this morning, September 16. The audience took place at Villa Barberini, the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo, where Leo has been staying since yesterday evening. The meeting took place in "a fraternal and cordial atmosphere, during which various ecclesial issues were discussed and the Armenian Patriarch emphasized the fate of the Armenians of Artsakh," as Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, representative of the Armenian Apostolic Church of Etchmiadzin to the Holy See, explained in a telephone conversation with the Armenian editorial staff of Vatican Radio - Vatican News .
The Patriarch invited the Pope to visit Armenia, Barsamian explains, and both reiterated the need for peace. A peace based on justice, as Karekin II emphasized.
