Catechesis. 5. To hope is to intuit. Ambrose of Milan
Dear brothers and sisters, good morning and welcome!
The Jubilee makes us pilgrims of hope, because we sense a great need for renewal that concerns us and the entire earth.
I just said "we intuit": this verb—to intuit—describes a movement of the spirit, an intelligence of the heart that Jesus observed especially in the little ones, that is, in people of humble spirit. Often, in fact, learned people have little intuition, because they presume to know. It is beautiful, however, to still have space in the mind and heart for God to reveal himself. How much hope there is when new insights arise among the people of God!
Jesus rejoices in this, He is filled with joy, because He realizes that the little ones have intuition. They have the sensus fidei , which is like a "sixth sense" of simple people for the things of God. God is simple and reveals himself to the simple. For this reason, there is an infallibility of the people of God in believing, of which the infallibility of the Pope is an expression and service (cf. Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, Lumen Gentium , 12; International Theological Commission, The Sensus Fidei in the Life of the Church , 30-40).
I would like to recall a moment in the history of the Church that shows how hope can come from the people's capacity for intuition. In the fourth century, in Milan, the Church was torn by great conflicts, and the election of a new bishop was turning into a veritable tumult. The civil authority, the governor Ambrose, intervened, and with his great ability to listen and mediate, he brought calm. The story goes that then a child's voice rose up and cried out: "Ambrose, bishop!" And so all the people also cried out: "Ambrose, bishop!"
Ambrose wasn't even baptized; he was merely a catechumen, that is, preparing for Baptism. However, the people sensed something profound about this man and elected him. Thus, the Church had one of its greatest bishops, and a Doctor of the Church.
At first, Ambrose doesn't want to, he even runs away. Then he understands that it is a calling from God, so he allows himself to be baptized and ordained bishop. And he becomes a Christian by being a bishop! Do you see what a great gift the little ones give to the Church? Even today, this is a grace we should ask for: becoming Christians while living out the calling we have received! Are you a mother, a father? Become a Christian like Mom and Dad. Are you an entrepreneur, a worker, a teacher, a priest, a nun? Become a Christian on your own path. People have this "sense": they understand whether we are becoming Christians or not. And they can correct us, they can show us the direction of Jesus.
Over the years, Saint Ambrose gave much back to his people. For example, he invented new ways of singing psalms and hymns, of celebrating, of preaching. He himself knew how to intuit, and thus hope multiplied. Augustine was converted by his preaching and was baptized by him. Intuition is a way of hoping, let's not forget that!
Even so, God moves his Church forward, showing her new paths. Intuition is the instinct of the little ones for the coming Kingdom. May the Jubilee help us become small according to the Gospel, to intuit and serve God's dreams!

APPEAL
Today, in Bilki, Ukraine, the priest Peter Paul Oros of the Eparchy of Mukachevo, killed in 1953 out of hatred for the faith, is being beatified. When the Greek Catholic Church was outlawed, he remained faithful to the Successor of Peter and courageously continued to exercise his ministry clandestinely, aware of the risks. We invoke the intercession of this new Blessed, that he may obtain for the dear Ukrainian people the courage to persevere in faith and hope, despite the tragedy of war.

I extend a warm welcome to the Italian-speaking faithful, especially those of the following dioceses: Latina-Terracina-Sezze-Priverno, with Bishop Mariano Crociata; Acerenza, with Archbishop Francesco Sirufo; Vicenza, with Bishop Giuliano Brugnotto. Dear friends, strive to grow rooted in listening to the Word of God and in personal and communal prayer. Thus, at the very sources of spirituality, you will be able to find the energy and light to walk vigorously toward a more incisive Christian witness.
I then greet the Renewal in the Spirit group of the Diocese of Salerno-Campagna-Acerno, the Vicariate of Fossombrone, the soldiers of the 46th Air Brigade of Pisa, the Autonomous Federation of Italian Bankers, and the Order of Nursing Professions of Arezzo.
Finally, my thoughts turn to young people, the sick, and newlyweds. May Christ, the Holy Door that leads us to the Father, always be at the center of your lives, so that you may be convinced and joyful witnesses of his love.
My blessing to everyone!
