The "Jesus Bikers," is a motorcycle movement founded in the German city of Schaafheim eleven years ago, travel long distances to raise funds for disadvantaged people. This group brought Pope Leo XIV a motorcycle, blessed and autographed by the pontiff. Because, explains the group's founder, Thomas Draxler, the bike will be donated to the Pontifical Mission Societies (Missio) in Austria and then auctioned off: the proceeds will go towards the construction of a school in a village in the diocese of Ihosy, Madagascar. "The Holy Father's blessing was a great gift for us," explains Cistercian Karl Wallner, national director of Missio Austria, "because it gives us even more strength to restore dignity to those children on the African island who, instead of learning to read and write, are exploited to work in mica mines—a mineral used in cosmetics and the paint industry—or in workshops, risking their lives from constant contact with toxic substances."
