Joining students of Pontifical Universities on Monday, as part of the Jubilee of the World of Education, Pope Leo XIV signed an Apostolic Letter, written to commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of Gravissimum Educationis, and to reflect on the current relevance of the Conciliar Declaration and on the challenges that education has to face today, in particular for Catholic schools and universities. The Letter will be made public on Tuesday, 28 October.
Pope Leo XIV will also designate St. John Henry Newman a patron saint of Catholic education in the document written for the 60th anniversary of Gravissimum Educationis, the Second Vatican Council’s declaration on Christian education. He will become an official co-patron saint of education, together with St. Thomas Aquinas. This will occur during the Vatican’s Jubilee of the World of Education from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1. Newman will also be declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIV at the jubilee’s closing Mass on November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints.
