Pope Leo XIV Arrives in Türkiye for Apostolic Journey of Unity and Peace
Pope Leo XIV has successfully arrived in Türkiye, marking the beginning of his first Apostolic Journey, which aims to bring a sign of unity and peace to the region, including a stop in Lebanon.
The papal plane, an ITA Airways Airbus A320neo, landed in Ankara, Türkiye, earlier today after departing from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport at 7:58 AM on Thursday.
The aircraft featured the image of Our Mother of Good Counsel, a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary held in high regard by the Augustinian order. This devotion is historically linked to the hill-town church of Genazzano, Italy, where the Augustinians have served since the 13th century.
It is a deeply personal symbol for the Pontiff, as Pope Leo XIV visited the church in Genazzano just two days after his election as the Successor of Peter. During that visit, he prayed before the ancient image of Our Mother of Good Counsel, which originated in Shkodër, Albania.
First Day in Türkiye: Ankara and Istanbul
The Apostolic Journey to Türkiye and Lebanon officially began in the capital city of Ankara. Pope Leo XIV's first stop upon arrival was the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, paying respects to the father of the Republic of Türkiye..
Following this, the Pope will proceed to the Presidential Palace. There, he will be formally welcomed and is scheduled to meet with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The Holy Father will also deliver a key address to the civil authorities and the diplomatic corps gathered there.
Later in the day, Pope Leo XIV will reboard the papal plane for a flight to Istanbul. He will take up residence at the Apostolic Nunciature in Istanbul for the remainder of his time in Türkiye before continuing his journey to Lebanon.
