🎙️ Michael Bublé: "When I hear music, I hear the voice of God"
Canadian singer and songwriter Michael Bublé will perform at the 6th edition of the Vatican's Concert with the Poor on 6 December. He shared that “music is a gift from God” and expressed his intention to use his artistic platform to convey his faith.
Michael Bublé on How His Faith Influences His Life:
Belief on Music: At a press conference preceding the event, Bublé stated, “When I hear music, I hear the voice of God”.
Platform and Purpose: The lifelong Catholic emphasized that his beliefs influence "everything he does and every decision he makes." He hopes his "brand is one of kindness, hope, and love" and views his musical role as a way to "spread the good Word".
Faith as a Guide: Describing faith as "a light in the midst of darkness," Bublé noted, “When you have faith, you have your own pilot light” and “If you have that faith and you have that light inside you, you can find your way.”
Service and Connection: Speaking with Fr. Felipe Herrera, Bublé called performing at the concert “an honor to serve” and expressed his joy in forming "truly a spiritual connection with the audience." Just before the show, he plans to offer a prayer: “Thank you, God, for blessing me with the ability to connect with these beautiful souls.”
The Concert and Papal Requests
The Event: Established in 2015, the Concert with the Poor is hosted at the Paul VI Audience Hall and reserves 3,000 seats specifically for the homeless, migrants, detainees with special permits, and those living in mental and social distress. Dinner and “comfort items” are distributed afterwards.
Performers: Bublé will join Msgr. Marco Frisina, Serena Autieri, and the Nova Opera Orchestra to fill the Hall with music, marking the start of the Advent season.
Meeting Pope Leo XIV: Bublé recounted his meeting with Pope Leo XIV that morning, calling it one of the greatest moments of his life. He also mentioned that the Pope had specific song requests.
Requested Song: One request from the Holy Father was Ave Maria, a song Bublé said he has “only sung once”. He explained his initial reaction: “When he asked, I was very nervous, I didn’t want to let him or any of you down”. He found reassurance in the performers behind him: “But with the amazing group behind me—the choir and orchestra—I realized, there’s no [need to] fear.”
The Program's Meaning: Bublé characterized the concert program as a means “to pay tribute and to give service to the moment…while at the same time celebrating the holiday. And Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ.”
Seeing God in Others
Teaching Moment: Reflecting on the event's significance for his four children, Bublé described the concert as “another example of how to be.”
Connecting with the Poor: He recounted reminding his family that they “can see God in those in need” when they encounter a homeless person. Bublé emphasized his shared humanity with the audience: “They’re beautiful souls,” adding that “suffering brings you closer to God."
