Benigni was accompanied by Italian state TV CEOs and producers for the private visit.
The meeting took place just prior to the broadcast of Benigni’s monologue, “Peter: A Man in the Wind,” on Rai 1. The production, created in partnership with Vatican Media, was formally presented earlier that day at the MAXXI Museum in Rome.
The Pope watched several clips from the production and shared his positive reaction, noting, "How beautiful, it speaks about love."
Before the screening, Pope Leo XIV and Benigni engaged in a conversation focusing on cinema. They discussed Benigni's celebrated Oscar-winning film Life Is Beautiful, as well as Frank Capra's It’s a Wonderful Life—both films the Pope has previously cited as being among his four favourite movies.
Their discussion also touched upon the themes at the heart of the monologue: the life of Saint Peter, the works of Dante and Saint Augustine, the Divine Comedy, and the Confessions.
In addition to Benigni and the TV executives, others present at the meeting included Paolo Ruffini, Prefect of the Dicastery for Communication; Stefano D’Agostini, Director of Vatican Media; and members of Benigni's creative team. The visit was confirmed in a note released on Telegram by the Holy See Press Office.
