Bishops of the Philippines with New President Outline 3 Priorities which Include Synodality and Artificial Intelligence

New President Archbishop Garcera Sets Two-Year Vision for CBCP
MANILA — Archbishop Gilbert Garcera, the newly installed president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), unveiled a two-year roadmap focused on shepherd care, structural collaboration, and synodality during the 131st plenary assembly on January 24.
Addressing 97 bishops at the Pope Pius XII Catholic Center, Garcera emphasized that the hierarchy must "care for the shepherds" before tending the flock. His agenda highlights support for retired and newly ordained bishops, alongside ongoing education on modern issues like artificial intelligence and human dignity. The assembly was preceded by a three-day bishops’ seminar on artificial intelligence, the implementation of synodality and a follow-up discussion on transparency and accountability.
Garcera also called for better integration between CBCP commissions and individual dioceses to ensure pastoral programs are responsive and collaborative. "The presidency is not about one person, but about walking together in mission," Garcera noted, succeeding Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David. Looking toward 2028, he urged the Church to maintain "moral clarity" ahead of the next national elections.
New CBCP Leadership Outlines Three Key Priorities
Archbishop Gilbert Garcera officially opened his term as CBCP President by setting a clear agenda for the next two years. During the 131st plenary assembly in Manila, he identified three pillars for his leadership:
Care for the Clergy: Prioritizing the well-being of retired bishops and the formation of new ones, specifically regarding emerging tech like AI.
Structural Synergy: Strengthening the link between CBCP commissions and local dioceses to ensure unified action.
Deepening Synodality: Moving beyond "events" to make synodality a permanent way of life for the Philippine Church.
Garcera, a COVID-19 survivor who views his new role as a "renewed gift of life," thanked his predecessor, Cardinal David, and called for "pastoral vigilance" as the country nears the 2028 elections.
