Sports Club Honored with Private Audience by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican

VATICAN CITY — In a landmark moment for the Larian sports club, a formal delegation from Como 1907 was received in a private audience by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on Jan. 19. Como 1907 is an Italian professional football (soccer)  club based in Como, Lombardy, currently competing in Serie A, the top tier of Italian football. The meeting took place within the historic Apostolic Palace, marking a significant chapter in the club’s rapid ascent both on and off the pitch.

The delegation was led by Club President Mirwan Suwarso, representing the ownership group, Sent Entertainment. He was joined by a high-profile contingent including Head Coach Cesc Fàbregas, veteran goalkeeper Mauro Vigorito, and star striker Álvaro Morata. Members of the technical and executive staff were also present to witness the occasion.

A Dialogue on Sport and Social Responsibility

The audience focused on the intersection of professional athletics and humanitarian values. Pope Leo XIV addressed the group, emphasizing that football is not merely a commercial enterprise but a powerful tool for social cohesion.

According to reports from the Vatican Press Office, the Holy Father spoke about the "missionary" nature of athletes, who serve as role models for millions of young people. He encouraged the Como representatives to continue fostering an environment of:

  • Mutual Respect: Transcending competitive rivalry to recognize the humanity in every opponent.

  • Community Integration: Using the club’s platform to support the local territory and vulnerable populations.

  • Integrity: Maintaining the "amateur spirit" (the love for the game) even within the pressures of elite professional football.

Symbolism and Gifts

As is tradition, the club presented the Pope with symbolic tokens of their identity. President Suwarso and Fàbregas gifted the Pontiff a commemorative Como 1907 jersey signed by the entire squad.

For Álvaro Morata, who has been vocal about his faith throughout his career, the meeting held personal significance. The striker noted that such moments serve as a "reflection on the responsibilities players carry beyond the 90 minutes of a match."

A "Proud Moment"

In an official statement released shortly after the audience, Como 1907 described the event as a "meaningful moment of reflection." The club reiterated its commitment to the values of community and respect, viewing this spiritual recognition as a validation of their project to rebuild the club into a global yet socially conscious brand.
