New Lenten "Eucharistic Chain" for Peace in the World Launched by Bishops of Europe

European Bishops Launch Lenten "Eucharistic Chain" for Peace

Across Europe, the Council of European Bishops' Conferences (CCEE) is reviving its annual "Eucharistic Chain"—a coordinated series of Masses dedicated to honoring war victims and praying for an end to global conflict.

From Ash Wednesday through the end of Lent, each national Bishops’ Conference will host at least one liturgy focused on what they term an "unarmed and disarming peace." This year's initiative highlights the ongoing suffering in Ukraine and the Holy Land, aiming to foster a continent-wide spirit of communion and hope.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

  • Purpose: To gather the Church in Europe around the Eucharist to invoke peace and remember those lost to violence.

  • Scope: Every national Bishops’ Conference within the CCEE will participate, creating a continuous "chain" of prayer throughout the season.

  • Focus Areas: Specific intentions will be offered for peace in Ukraine, the Holy Land, and all conflict-ridden regions.

Papal Participation and Lenten Observance

The initiative aligns with Pope Leo XIV's recent message for the World Day of Peace, where he urged the faithful to view peace not as an impossible goal, but as a "presence and a journey."

To mark the beginning of the season:

  1. Ash Wednesday: The Pope will lead the traditional Statio and penitential procession from Saint Anselmo to the Basilica of Saint Sabina for Mass.

  2. Spiritual Exercises: From February 22–27, the Holy Father and the Roman Curia will withdraw for their annual Lenten retreat at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace
