Pope Leo XIV Approves New Statutes for the Pontifical International Marian Academy
In a move to modernize the Church’s approach to Mariological research, Pope Leo XIV has officially approved updated statutes for the Pontifical International Marian Academy (PAMI). The decision, announced via a Vatican Rescript on February 7, 2026, aims to align the Academy’s regulatory framework with contemporary curial structures and its expanding global mission.
A Legacy of Scholarship and Devotion
Originally founded in 1946 by the Order of Friars Minor, the Academy was designed to centralize and elevate the study of the Virgin Mary. Over the decades, it has evolved from a Franciscan initiative into a premier global institution:
1950: Entrusted with organizing International Mariological-Marian Congresses.
1959: Granted the "Pontifical" title by Pope John XXIII through the Motu Proprio Maiora in dies.
1972: Formally aggregated to the Pontifical Antonianum University.
2012: Incorporated the Pontifical Academy of the Immaculate Conception.
Modernizing the Mandate
The new statutes reflect a shift toward intercultural dialogue and the promotion of "authentic" Marian devotion. As noted in the Rescript, the Academy serves as a vital bridge between academic research and the universal Magisterium, fostering peace and fraternity through theological study.
"Mariology is a necessary presence in dialogue between cultures, capable of fostering fraternity and peace." — Pope Francis (2019 Message to Pontifical Academies)
Administrative Alignment
Under the new guidelines, the Academy’s coordination—previously overseen by the Pontifical Council for Culture—is now officially under the Dicastery for Culture and Education, following the reforms of the Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium.
