From Oxford to Rome: Prominent Anglican Leader Robin Ward Converts to Catholicism
Canon Robin Ward, age 60, the former longtime rector of the prestigious St. Stephen’s House in Oxford, has officially been received into the Catholic Church. A cornerstone of the Anglo-Catholic tradition for decades, Ward’s transition marks a significant moment for England’s theological landscape.
The Journey to Full Communion
After nearly 20 years leading one of the Church of England’s most traditional theological colleges, Ward stepped down in April 2025. He was received into the Church by Abbot Cuthbert Brogan at St. Michael’s Abbey.
Ward’s path was defined by a deep academic and spiritual commitment to the "pre-Reformation" roots of Christianity. His conversion is rooted in two major intellectual pillars:
St. John Henry Newman: Ward describes Newman as the "teacher of our time," comparing his importance to that of St. Augustine or Thomas Aquinas. Having studied Newman since the 1980s, Ward chose "John Henry" as his confirmation name.
Pope Benedict XVI: Following in the footsteps of many "Catholic-minded" Anglicans, Ward cited the late Pope’s writings as essential "guiding signs" that pointed him toward Rome.
