BREAKING Missing Catholic Priest Found Dead after Celebrating 2 Holy Masses - RIP Father Juan Zavala Madrigal

Catholic Priest Found Dead After Disappearing on Rural Road in Mexico

After a long Sunday spent serving the indigenous communities of San Andrés Carrizal, Father Juan Manuel Zavala Madrigal never made it home. A wrong turn on a dark mountain road led to a frantic final phone call where the "beloved" priest described being lost and his car being stuck. In a statement, the Archdiocese of Tuxtla Gutiérrez stated that the priestʼs body was found near Laguna Verde, about 12 miles from his parish. The priest ministered as vicar at St. Mark the Evangelist parish in the town of Ocotepec.

Dangerous Landscape: It is worth noting the sensitivity of this event given the 2024 murder of Father Marcelo Pérez Pérez in the area and many priests in Mexico. Strangely, his backpack and garments were found at a distance from his body. TV Azteca reported the priest’s backpack was found in a different location from his body and his cassock and other priestly vestments were discovered on the ground by his car, While this case appears accidental, the heightened concern for the safety of clergy in Chiapas remains a significant backdrop to the community's grief.

The State Prosecutor’s Office of Chiapas has confirmed that Father Juan Manuel Zavala Madrigal, age 62, died of what they call an accidental drowning in the Laguna Verde eco-tourism center. The vicar of Ocotepec went missing Sunday, March 8th,  night after officiating two masses in the impoverished region.

Following a final, disoriented phone call to a relative at 11:00 PM, search brigades discovered his vehicle stuck on a rural road in Coapilla. His body was later found in the nearby lagoon; authorities noted that surveillance footage showed the priest wandering alone, supporting the theory of an accidental fall. While the priest suffered from bivascular coronary disease, no signs of violence were found. The community of San Marcos Evangelista will hold a funeral mass on March 11 to honor his 35 years of pastoral service.

A Final Pilgrimage: The Tragic Loss of Father Juan Manuel Zavala Madrigal

By Monday morning, the parishioners he served had organized to find him, eventually discovering his scattered priestly vestments and his black Volkswagen Jetta. The search ended in heartbreak at the edge of Laguna Verde. Investigators believe the 62-year-old, perhaps disoriented or hampered by a known heart condition, accidentally fell into the water. In a region recently scarred by the violent loss of other religious leaders, the Church mourns Zavala Madrigal not as a victim of crime, but as a devoted servant who died in the line of his pastoral duty.
