BREAKING New Catholic Church Statistics from Germany Reveal 110,000 Baptisms and Over 19 Million Catholics

The latest data from the German Bishops' Conference (DBK) highlights several resilient trends and positive shifts within the Catholic Church for 2025. While challenges remain, the statistics point toward a stabilizing community and a renewed commitment to the faith. The number of Catholics in Germany recorded for 2025 is 19.2 million members (23% - the largest religious group) in comparison to the Protestant Church which recorded 17.4 million (21%) members for the same year. Muslims are a minority at about 7%.

Signs of Vitality: Baptisms and Sacraments

The Church continues to be a cornerstone for spiritual milestones, welcoming a significant number of new members into the fold:

  • 110,000 Baptisms: Nearly 110,000 individuals were welcomed into the faith through baptism last year, underscoring the Church's enduring role in family life and spiritual beginnings.

  • Growing Interest in Rejoining: There was a notable increase in new memberships and readmissions, totaling 7,700 people—a rise of 1,100 over the previous year. Remarkably, 87% of these new members converted from the Protestant Church.

  • Steady Sacramental Life: Participation in First Communions (152,300) and Confirmations (105,000) remained almost constant, with both figures showing slight upward growth, signaling a stable foundation for the next generation of believers.

Improving Trends in Membership

The data reflects a significant "cooling" of the recent trend of departures, showing the lowest exit figures in half a decade.

  • Lowest Departures Since 2020: With 307,117 departures, the Church saw its best retention figures in five years. This continues a steady downward trend from the record highs seen in 2022.

  • Mitigated Decline: The overall decrease in membership has slowed. The total loss of members was reduced by roughly 25,000 people compared to the previous year’s decline.

  • Regional Success Stories: Several dioceses saw dramatic improvements in retention, most notably Eichstätt (-15%), Aachen (-9%), and Limburg (-9%).

Engagement and Outlook

Beyond the raw numbers, the Church is seeing a gradual return to active participation and a forward-looking leadership.

  • Rising Mass Attendance: The percentage of Catholics attending church services rose from 2024 to 6.8%, continuing a positive post-pandemic recovery. However, Catholics attending Mass in Germany has fallen from 10.4% in 2015 to 6.8% in 2025.

  • Resilient Witnessing: DBK Chairman Heiner Wilmer emphasized that these shifts encourage the Church to "look ahead" and seek new ways to integrate Christian values into modern society through "great personal commitment" and ecumenical unity.

"I encourage us not to bury our heads in the sand, but to look ahead... [to] seek ways in which being Christian can lead to greater acceptance in society today." — Heiner Wilmer, DBK Chairman
