The Central Office of Church Statistics (Secretariat of State) has released its latest publications through the Vatican Publishing House.
Church Hierarchy (2025 data): 6 dioceses were elevated to metropolitan sees, and 8 new dioceses were erected.
Global Summary (2023–2024 data): The global Church reflects a stable overall footprint but showcases a dramatic shift in its geographical center of gravity, particularly toward Africa.
🌍 Global Catholic Population
In 2024, the worldwide Catholic population reached just over 1.422 billion (up from ~1.406 billion in 2023), marking a relative increase of 1.14%. The proportion of Catholics in the global population remained stable at approximately 17.8%.

👥 Apostolic Workers & Clergy
By the end of 2024, the Church's total apostolic workforce stood at 4,464,622 (a 0.7% increase from 2023).
Clerics (Bishops, priests, and permanent deacons) make up 10.4% of this total workforce globally, though this varies by region:
More Clerical: Europe (20.7%) and Oceania (20.6%).
More Lay-Oriented: Africa (9.2%) and the Americas (6.8%).
Breakdown of Clerics (465,048 Total)
1. Bishops
The total number of Bishops grew by 1.75% (from 5,430 to 5,525).
Regional Growth: Asia lead at +3.3%, followed by Africa at +2.6%. Oceania (+1.5%), the Americas (+1.3%), and Europe (+1.1%) trailed the average.
Distribution: Europe and the Americas still account for roughly 68% of all Bishops.
Catholics per Bishop: The global average is 257,000. The highest ratios are in Africa (365,000) and the Americas (333,000); the lowest are in Oceania (88,000), Europe (170,000), and Asia (180,000).
2. Priests
The total number of priests grew by 425 (from 406,996 to 407,421).
Growth by Region: Asia grew to 75,121 (+1.4%), the Americas grew to 118,544, and Africa saw increases. Europe saw declines.
Workload: The global average dropped from 75 priests per Bishop to 74. Ratios fell in the Americas (58.8 to 58), Europe (92.6 to 90), and Oceania (33.3 to 33), but rose in Africa (71.6 to 72) and Asia (85.2 to 86).
Pastoral Coverage: Europe has just over 1,800 Catholics per priest; Asia has just under 2,100; Africa has roughly 5,000; South America has over 7,600.
3. Permanent Deacons
Grew by 1.3% globally (from 51,433 to 52,102). Africa saw the sharpest spike at +7.0% (8,860 total), though the Americas still hold 86.8% of the world's total deacons.
🤝 Religious, Secular Institutes, and Laity
Non-Priest Religious: Totaled 48,511 (down 0.5%). Breakdown: Asia (12,962), Europe (12,831), Americas (12,484), Africa (9,368), and Oceania (866).
Women Religious: Totaled 589,423. While numbers declined in Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, Africa saw a +2.6% increase.
Secular Institutes: Totaled 18,177 (down 1.8%). Growth was only seen in Africa (+1.5%).
Lay Missionaries: Grew by 4.2% (from 444,606 to 463,079), with Africa's total rising by 7.0% (8,860 individuals).
Catechists: The largest workforce bracket at 2.9 million. Numbers grew in Asia and the Americas, but dipped slightly in Africa and Europe. Nearly 55% of all catechists are located in the Americas.
🎓 Vocations & Sacraments
Priestly Vocations
Major seminarians (philosophy and theology students) decreased by 2.72% globally (from 106,495 to 103,604).
The Exception: Africa was the only continent to experience growth (+2.25%).
Distribution (2024): Africa (34.5%), Asia (26.7%), Americas (26.2%), Europe (11.7%), Oceania (0.9%).
Vocation Density: Africa boasts the highest ratio of candidates to priests (628.9 per 1,000 priests), while North America has the lowest (120 per 1,000). The global average is 254.3 per 1,000.
Participation in the Sacraments
Baptisms: 13,065,918 (down 0.6%). Heaviest in the Americas (40.7%) and Africa (31.7%).
Marriages: 1,818,998. Breakdown: Americas (37.4%), Asia (21.5%), Africa (21.0%), and Europe (19.3%).
First Communions: 9,194,143 (up 1.1%).
Confirmations: 7,823,882 (up 1.7%). The Americas make up just over 45% of the global total for both First Communions and Confirmations.
