Christianity's Holiest Site Church of the Holy Sepulchre Remains Locked Due to Conflict

Jerusalem’s Holy Sites Shuttered Amid Regional Conflict

As the conflict between Israel and Iran intensifies, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre—traditionally honored as the site of Jesus’s crucifixion and burial—remains closed to the public. The shutdown, which began on 28 February 2026, is part of a sweeping security mandate by Israeli authorities following military exchanges between Israel, the U.S., and Iran.

Security vs. Sanctity: The Scope of Closures

The Israeli government has cited the threat of ballistic missile strikes as the primary reason for locking down the Old City's most sacred landmarks. Key details include:

  • Impacted Sites: The closure extends beyond the Holy Sepulchre to include the Western Wall and Temple Mount (Al-Aqsa Mosque compound).

  • Direct Threats: On 12 March, the Israeli Foreign Ministry confirmed a missile strike landed within several hundred meters of these historic sites, reinforcing the government’s "safety first" stance.

  • Movement Restrictions: During the significant Muslim night of Laylat al-Qadr (15 March), the Old City was sealed, preventing thousands of worshippers from reaching Al-Aqsa and restricting residents from leaving their neighborhoods.

The Looming Holy Week

With Holy Week beginning on 29 March, church leaders are navigating a difficult landscape. Under the "Status Quo" agreement—which governs the shared use of the site by Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Armenian, and other denominations—the church is a global focal point for Easter.

"The church leaders intend to meet with police to impress on them the need to allow Easter celebrations, even if at a reduced capacity, similar to the pandemic restrictions." —Sami el-Yousef, CEO of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

Current Outlook

While some local churches remain open, Joseph Hazboun of the CNEWA/Pontifical Mission expects the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to stay shuttered to the general public until the cessation of rocket fire. For now, the world-famous doors remain locked, leaving pilgrims to pray from the outside—a scene reminiscent of the 2020 pandemic lockdowns.
