Pope Leo XIV approves revised Statutes, signed by and dated February 27, 2026, for the Pontifical Academy for Life.
The Pontifical Academy for Life has officially updated its governing framework to include a fresh category of contributors. Originally established by John Paul II in 1994, the Academy remains dedicated "to defend and promote the value of human life and the dignity of the person."
Expansion of the Academy: The "Supporters"
Building upon the 2016 Statutes promulgated by Pope Francis, the institution has introduced a new tier known as “Supporters.” This role is designed for individuals who align with the Academy’s mission but may not have a traditional scholarly background. According to the announcement:
"These are individuals who, identifying with the Academy’s institutional purposes, contribute to the advancement of its academic activities. They are persons who do not possess an academic profile but who wish to sustain the objectives promoted by the Academy."
Key Structural Updates
The revised Statutes, signed by Pope Leo XIV and dated February 27, 2026, outline the Academy’s current organizational hierarchy:
The Presidency: Holding governing responsibilities.
The Central Office: Reaffirming its "executive and coordinating role."
The Members: The core academic body.
The Supporters: The newly added category.
Appointment Process: Supporters are appointed to a three-year term, which can be renewed for up to two additional mandates. This requires a resolution from the Governing Council and is "subject to the prior nulla osta of the Secretariat of State."
Continuity of Mission
While the text is the result of over a year of development, the updates focus primarily on "orderly formal coordination" and renumbering rather than "substantial innovations."
The Academy continues to stand by its founding mandate from the 1994 Motu Proprio Vitae Mysterium, asserting that it “has as its purpose the defence and promotion of the value of human life and the dignity of the person.”
