Pope Leo XIV Meets with Austria's President Alexander Van der Bellen and Discusses Peaceful Solutions to Conflicts



Communiqué from the Holy See Press Office: Audience with the President of the Republic of Austria, March 5, 2026

This morning, the Holy Father Leo XIV received in audience, in the Vatican Apostolic Palace, the President of the Republic of Austria, HE Mr. Alexander Van der Bellen, who subsequently met with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of His Holiness, accompanied by HE Msgr. Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations.

During the cordial discussions at the Secretariat of State, satisfaction was expressed for the good relations between the Holy See and Austria, emphasizing the positive contribution of the Catholic Church to promoting the common good of society. Reference was also made to some particularly timely issues, such as migration and the relationship between religions.

The conversation continued, focusing on current international issues, particularly conflict situations, and calling for a greater role for the international community in finding peaceful solutions.
