Thousands at Funeral for Father Pierre El Raii the Beloved Priest Killed in Lebanon and Remembered by Pope Leo XIV as a True Shepherd

Farewell to Father Pierre El Raii: Qlayaa Honors a Fallen Pastor

In the Christian village of Qlayaa, nestled in the mountains of southern Lebanon, a profound sense of grief and communal solidarity marked the funeral of Father Pierre El Raii. The Maronite parish priest was killed this past Monday during an Israeli attack while reportedly rushing to assist a parishioner.

The ceremony drew a massive turnout, including ecclesiastical, civil, and military figures, all gathered to honor a man described by Father Toufic Bou Merhi as a "true shepherd, ready to give himself for his flock, even to the point of offering his own life for his faithful."

Ecclesial Communion and Apostolic Support

The funeral served as a powerful testament to the unity of the region's Christian community. Among the dignitaries was the apostolic nuncio to Lebanon, Archbishop Paolo Borgia. His presence was intended to "express the Holy See's closeness and support for the region's Christians," particularly as the nuncio had originally planned a pastoral visit to the area alongside Father Pierre before the tragedy struck.

A delegation from the Maronite Patriarchate, led by Monsignor Elias Nassar and Archbishop Charbel Abdallah, joined numerous Catholic and Orthodox priests in a visible "sign of the ecclesial communion and of the esteem that Father Pierre enjoyed among all."

A Legacy of Service

Before the Holy Mass, representatives from local authorities and Caritas—where Father Pierre served as regional chaplain—spoke of his tireless dedication. They emphasized:

  • Pastoral Generosity: His unwavering commitment to children and young people.

  • Steadfastness: The community's collective "determination to remain in their homes and on their lands, preserving the memory and teachings" of their priest.

A Message from the Patriarch

During the service, a message from the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch, Cardinal Béchara Boutros Raï, was read to the faithful. The Patriarch reflected on Father Pierre's journey since his 2014 ordination, highlighting his specific mission of:

"encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith and in their homes despite difficulties."

These difficulties remain acute as continuous attacks affect the region. The Patriarch noted that in this ongoing conflict, "all of Lebanon and the Lebanese people are paying a very high price."

Global Echoes

The tragedy in Lebanon resonated at the Vatican. At the conclusion of his general audience, Pope Leo XIV requested prayers for those in conflict zones, specifically mentioning the Middle East and the "too many civilian victims and innocent children" lost to the violence.
