Bomb Threat Targets Pope Leo’s Brother Following Trump Criticism
CHICAGO — According to The Hill and the Lennox police, authorities were called to the suburban Chicago home of John Prevost, the older brother of Pope Leo XIV, late Wednesday night following a targeted bomb threat.
Local police ordered an immediate evacuation of the residence while specialized units conducted a sweep of the property. Following a thorough investigation, law enforcement officials determined the threat was unfounded, and no explosive devices were discovered.
The incident occurred just days after President Donald Trump launched a public criticism against the pontiff. During a recent rally, Trump accused Pope Leo—formerly Robert Prevost—of supporting a nuclear-armed Iran, a claim that fact-checkers have dismissed as false.
In his remarks, Trump drew a sharp contrast between the Pope and his other brother, Louis “Lou” Prevost. Trump praised Louis, a Florida resident and vocal supporter of the MAGA movement, while lamenting that the Pope did not share his brother’s political leanings.
The contrast between the three Prevost brothers has become a flashpoint in recent political discourse:
Pope Leo XIV: The first U.S.-born Pope, known for a moderate and inclusive approach since his election in 2025.
John Prevost: A retired Catholic school principal who maintains a close, private relationship with his brother, famously noting that the two used to play Wordle together every morning.
Louis Prevost: A Navy veteran whose history of social media posts—including attacks on Democratic leadership and LGBTQ+ rights—has previously drawn scrutiny.
While investigators have not officially named a motive, the timing of the threat has raised concerns regarding politically motivated extremism. Critics argue that the rhetoric surrounding the Pope’s family has created a volatile environment for those caught in the crosshairs of the current administration’s grievances.
Spokespeople for the Vatican and the Prevost family have not yet issued formal statements regarding the incident. John Prevost was allowed to return to his home early Thursday morning.
