Pope Leo XIV Arrives in Cameroon: The Second Leg of the African Pilgrimage

Fresh from his visit to Algeria, Pope Leo XIV touched down at Yaoundé-Nsimalen International Airport at 2:57 p.m. local time today, Wednesday, April 15. This arrival marks the beginning of the second chapter of his multi-nation apostolic journey across the African continent.


The Arrival Ceremony

The Holy Father was greeted on the tarmac by Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and two local children. Following the performance of national anthems and the formal introduction of state delegations, the Pope held a brief introductory meeting with the Prime Minister.

This visit follows a two-day stay in Algeria, where he kicked off his itinerary on Monday, April 13.

The Pope’s 10-day journey is a whirlwind of diplomacy and pastoral care:

  • Cameroon (April 15–18): Currently underway.

  • Angola & Equatorial Guinea: The final two stops on the pilgrimage.

  • Return to Rome: Thursday, April 23.


Today’s Agenda in Yaoundé

Pope Leo XIV has a packed schedule for his first day in the Cameroonian capital:

  • Presidential Meeting: A private audience with President Paul Barthélemy Biya at the Presidential Palace, followed by a formal address to civil authorities, diplomatic corps, and members of civil society.

  • Community Outreach: A visit to the Ngul Zamba Orphanage, where the Pope will spend time with residents and staff.

  • Ecclesial Dialogue: The day concludes with a private session with the Cameroonian Bishops at the headquarters of the Episcopal Conference.

The Pope will remain in Cameroon until Saturday before heading south to continue his journey of faith and solidarity.
