Popemobile to Travel Across the USA on a Mission for Children of War - Pope Leo XIV's Vehicle Goes on a Road Trip for Hope
The "Hopemobile": A Cross-Country Mission for Children of War
A unique symbol of the Papacy is heading to American soil with a new purpose. The Dicastery for the Service of Charity has officially partnered with the U.S.-based organization Cross Catholic Outreach to launch a 3,700-mile solidarity road trip aimed at supporting children devastated by global conflict.
A Journey of Hope: "American Catholic Heroes"
Dubbed "The Road Trip for Hope," the initiative will see an official Popemobile—reimagined for this mission as the "Hopemobile"—travel from New York to California.
Timeline: June and July 2026.
The Route: 13 major cities, including New York, Washington D.C., St. Louis, and various stops throughout the Southwest.
Purpose: To raise awareness for war victims, facilitate moments of communal prayer, and fundraise for the world’s most vulnerable youth.
The project concludes with a major charity auction in the United States, with all proceeds directed toward the Dicastery’s global humanitarian efforts.
Strengthening the Mission
On April 28, the Papal Almoner, Archbishop Luis Marín de San Martín, officially handed the keys of the vehicle to Michele Sagarino, President of Cross Catholic Outreach. Following the General Audience on Wednesday, Sagarino met with Pope Leo XIV to discuss the organization’s ongoing work, which spans 32 countries and hundreds of projects focused on healthcare, clean water, and spiritual aid.
"Charity, the backbone of Christian life, must not remain theoretical, but must be expressed in action, which becomes service." — Archbishop Luis Marín de San Martín
A Legacy of Compassion
The initiative was originally envisioned and authorized by Pope Francis, with a specific focus on children whose lives have been upended by armed conflict. This mission aligns with the teachings of Pope Leo XIV, who emphasized in his Apostolic Exhortation Dilexi te that the Church finds its most authentic self by serving the "poorest of the poor."
By coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence, the tour serves as a bridge between American history and a modern call for global peace and evangelization. Through this "Hopemobile," the Church seeks to turn a vehicle of prestige into a vessel of tangible relief for those in wounded places.
