Pope Leo XIV Appoints a New Bishop for the Diocese of Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, Canada


Pope Leo XIV has appointed a new bishop for the Diocese of Prince Albert in Saskatchewan, Canada. This follows the transfer of Bishop Stephen Hero who was ordained as the Bishop of the Diocese of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, in June 2021, serving there until his appointment as Archbishop of Edmonton in 2025.

Ottawa – Today, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV appointed the Reverend Kenneth Thorson, O.M.I., as Bishop of Prince Albert.

Bishop-elect Thorson was born on 19 September 1966, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. On 26 August 1992, he joined the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate for the Lacombe Province, entering its novitiate in Arnprior, Ontario. He made his first profession of vows on 14 August 1993 and his perpetual profession of vows on 19 August 1997. He was ordained to the diaconate on 14 June 1998, and to the priesthood on 21 May 1999.

Bishop-elect Thorson holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan and a Baccalaureate in Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

As a newly ordained priest, Father Thorson began his ministry at St. Patrick’s Parish in Saskatoon, first serving as Assistant Pastor and then as Pastor for three years. During this period, he also served as a chaplain at E.D. Feehan High School.

In 2003, he was assigned to the OMI Anglo-Irish Province as a member of a community in Birmingham, England.

On 1 August 2008, Father Thorson was assigned to St. Charles Formation Community of the OMI Lacombe Province, based in Ottawa, Ontario, and appointed Vocations Director. On 2 May 2013, he became Vicar Provincial of the Lacombe Province. On 24 January 2019, he was elected Provincial Superior and served two terms, completing his service in June 2025. As Provincial Superior, he served as the OMI’s representative on Our Lady of Guadalupe Circle.

The Diocese of Prince Albert has 79 parishes and missions. Its Catholic population of 32,000 is served by 34 diocesan priests, 5 priests in consecrated life, 11 permanent deacons, and 23 women in consecrated life.
