RIP Jim Hughes - Pro-Life Hero who Established March for Life in Canada Dies at Age 82

The Canadian pro-life organization Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) announced the passing of Jim Hughes, its President Emeritus and one of the great leaders of the Canadian pro-life movement. Hughes, father of four, died on Monday, May 18, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 82 (1943-2026).

“Jim Hughes dedicated his life to defending innocent human life and building the pro-life movement in Canada,” said Jeff Gunnarson, National President of Campaign Life Coalition. “He was the backbone of this movement for decades and remained uncompromising and steadfast throughout, deeply committed to his faith in God and to the truth that every human life is valuable and worthy of protection because it bears the image of God.”

Born and raised in Toronto, Hughes devoted nearly five decades of his life to defending the sanctity of human life. In 1978, after a successful career in business, he joined Campaign Life Coalition at the urging of his wife, Virginia. What began as a two-year commitment became a lifetime of service to the pro-life cause.

Under Hughes’ leadership, Campaign Life Coalition helped shape, strengthen, and mobilize the pro-life movement across Canada. He worked tirelessly with elected officials, clergy, and community leaders to move forward the pro-life position in Parliament, provincial legislatures, city halls and school boards across this country. There are few pro-life leaders today whom he didn’t recruit, mentor, or encourage to get involved in whatever way they could.

Hughes had been at the helm of numerous initiatives over the years. He established the Parliamentary Pro-Life Caucus to aid and support pro-life politicians in Ottawa. REAL Women of Canada arose out of Campaign Life, the Family Coalition Party began in 1987 with strong support from Campaign Life, and the pro-life newspaper The Interim was founded by Hughes in 1983. Campaign Life’s voice has also been raised at the United Nations, convincing UN delegates to reject anti-life and anti-family proposals. And of course there is the National March for Life, the annual rally on Parliament Hill that attracts thousands to Ottawa each May.

Father Tom Lynch, President Priests For Life Canada, wrote, “It was over 40 years ago that I met Jim Hughes. Very fittingly, it was on Parliament Hill. Many times, there after, we met in the same place and all too often with the same result. I admired Jim for never losing hope, never giving up and never failing to speak up for the pre-born and the defenceless. We worked together for many years with CLC, in its various forms, and in too many organizations to count. Positive, funny, indefatigable, and always on the look out for another opportunity to speak, to organize and to achieve the goals of the Pro-Life Movement – he will be sorely missed.”

Alissa Golob, the co-founder of Right Now, an organization to promote the election of pro-life MPs, remembered Mr. Hughes for his role in her formation as an pro-lifer.

“Jim gave me my start in the pro-life movement by hiring me right out of university as the Youth Coordinator for Campaign Life Coalition,” wrote Golob on X. “He gave me many amazing opportunities and helped shape me to become the pro-life woman I am today. Although we had our differences, at the end of the day he was an amazing man who wanted to protect babies and is the reason why so many pro-life organizations exist today. He is greatly loved and will be missed.”

Patrick Craine, the president of Our Lady Seat of Wisdom College, stated in a Facebook tribute that it was an honour to work alongside Hughes for many years as president of Campaign Life Coalition Nova Scotia.
In an excerpt from his tribute, Craine wrote,

With a heavy heart, I share the news below of the passing of Jim Hughes, a true giant of the pro-life movement in Canada, and a man who gave everything to the defence of the unborn.

But he was not just a leader, he was a leader of leaders, inspiring and mentoring countless men and women who would go on to work for the renewal of our culture in so many different ways. He didn't just lead a movement; he was crucial in building its institutions and raising up those who would carry them forward.

Beneath all of it was a deep and abiding faith. Jim was a committed Catholic, and it was that faith, not mere ideology or politics, that animated everything he did. He understood the defence of the unborn not as a cause among many, but as a profound moral and spiritual calling. His was the conviction of a man who truly believed every life is made in the image and likeness of God, and who ordered his entire life accordingly.

Please pray for the repose of his soul and for the consolation of his family, his friends, and all who had the joy of knowing and working with him.

CLC noted, Hughes played a key role in building many of the movement’s initiatives, including The Interim, Canada’s pro-life and pro-family newspaper, founded in 1983. He also established the annual National March for Life in Ottawa, in 1997, which has become the largest annual pro-life gathering in Canada. He worked relentlessly to establish a bipartisan Parliamentary Pro-Life Caucus in Ottawa, which still exists today.

CLC's President, Jeff Gunnarson said, “Jim had a remarkable mind and an extraordinary memory. He was quick on his feet, politically astute, and had an instinctive sense of the right approach to take in difficult circumstances”  “But what truly defined Jim was his heart. He cared deeply for the unborn, for mothers in crisis, and for everyone around him. He would go to extraordinary lengths to help someone in need.”
