Mozambican Catholic Church Mourns Sudden Passing of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso at 54

QUELIMANE, MOZAMBIQUE (CISA) — June 6, 2026

The Catholic Church in Mozambique, Africa, and the Consolata Missionaries are in mourning following the fatal shooting of Bishop Osório Citora Afonso, IMC. The 54-year-old prelate served as the Bishop of the Diocese of Quelimane and was recently appointed as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Beira.

According to Maximino Amílcar, Spokesman for SERNIC in Zambezia, individuals still in an undetermined number have invaded the prelate's residence at dawn, firing shots that hit the victim in the chest region.
According to the source, the body of Osorio Citora Afonso was found in the early hours of the morning inside the residence.
The motives of crime remain unknown. Meanwhile, the National Criminal Investigation Service ensures that it has already started due diligence in order to clarify the case and identify the perpetrators.
The death of Dom Osorio Citora Afonso is causing dismay among the Catholic faithful, members of the clergy and various sectors of Zambezi society.
Authorities promise to continue investigating the case and provide more information as the process develops.

The tragic news was announced by Archbishop Inácio Saúre, President of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique, in a message to Fr. Cassiano Kalima, IMC, the Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries in Mozambique. According to Archbishop Saúre, Bishop Afonso was found lifeless in a corridor at the episcopal residence in Quelimane.

In response to the tragedy, Fr. Kalima urged the faithful to unite in prayer:

"Let us pray for his eternal rest, for his family, for us as Consolata Missionaries, and for the Catholic Church in Mozambique. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Consolata and Saint Joseph, may he rest in peace."

A Rising Leader and Scholar

Bishop Afonso was widely regarded as one of Mozambique's most dynamic and promising Church leaders. Alongside his leadership in Quelimane, he served as the Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique. On April 10, 2026, Pope Leo XIV had additionally entrusted him with the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Beira.

Known for combining intellectual depth with a gentle pastoral approach, Bishop Afonso was a dedicated contributor to Consolata missionary publications and a strong supporter of The Seed Magazine. He is also warmly remembered for championing the sainthood causes of the "Martyrs of Guiúa"—a group of lay Mozambican catechists and their families killed for their faith in 1992.

Biography and Distinguished Ministry

Born on May 6, 1972, in Ribaue, Nampula, Mozambique, Bishop Afonso dedicated his life to missionary work. He took his solemn vows with the Consolata Missionaries in 2001 in Kinshasa, DRC, and was ordained a priest on November 3, 2002.

His extensive academic and pastoral journey spanned several continents:

  • Higher Education: Studied philosophy and theology in Mozambique and the DRC; earned a licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome; conducted advanced studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and L’École Biblique et Archéologique of Jerusalem.

  • Pastoral & Formational Roles: Served as a parish vicar, seminary formator, and regional counsellor in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Italy.

  • Vatican Service: Joined the Holy See in 2017 as an official for the Dicastery for Evangelization (Section for First Evangelization and New Particular Churches).

The sudden loss of Bishop Afonso has deeply shocked the global Catholic community, cutting short a vibrant ministry that promised many more years of dedicated service. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course by the Diocese of Quelimane and the Episcopal Conference of Mozambique.
