Pope Leo XIV Leads 1.2 Million in Madrid’s Corpus Christi Celebrations

MADRID — On the second day of his pastoral visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV presided over the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), drawing a massive crowd of over 1.2 million faithful to Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles and its surrounding avenues.

Celebrating Mass against the backdrop of Spain’s deeply rooted traditions, the Pope expressed profound joy in gathering around the Eucharist, which he described as "the gift of Christ’s living presence among us."

A Living School of Faith, Not a Museum

During his homily, Pope Leo XIV issued a powerful challenge regarding the future of Spain's spiritual heritage. He emphasized that the country's rich history of Eucharistic devotion must transcend mere folklore, art, and historic processions.

"The task of Spain today and in the future is to ensure that the religiosity which has shaped and defined this country for centuries is not a museum of the past to be visited, but a school of faith from which to draw even today."

According to the Pope, this "school of faith" demands two core actions from the modern faithful:

  • Kneeling before God and neighbor: Letting selfless love break the chains of egoism.

  • Active social engagement: Moving beyond a comfortable, private faith to personally confront societal challenges and build the common good.

Christ on the Streets and Among the Marginalized

Pope Leo XIV explained that the Corpus Christi processions symbolize a God who actively walks with His people through history. He reminded the crowd that the Christ carried through the streets in the monstrance is the very same Christ who identifies with the poor, the lonely, and the downtrodden. The celebration, he noted, is a direct call to abandon selfishness and indifference.

In his closing remarks, the Pope urged the faithful to return to the Lord with sincere love and to allow the Eucharist to transform them.

"May the Lord Jesus, present in the Eucharist, transform you into bread that is broken, given, and offered," he prayed, hoping that this grace would make the people of Spain protagonists in transforming history and bringing hope to those who suffer.

The Procession: The historic celebration concluded with a traditional Eucharistic Procession and Benediction. Pope Leo XIV led the faithful, carrying the monstrance along pathways beautifully adorned with 16 distinct tapestries handcrafted from more than 30,000 flower petals.
