Reaction of the French bishops to the proposed law aimed at combating violence in schools
The French bishops have reacted to the proposed law aimed at preventing and combating violence in schools, which considers calling into question the confidentiality of confession and the partnership agreement for Catholic education. This reaction was published in Le Figaro.May 29, 2026.
The proposed law of parliamentary origin aimed at preventing and combating violence in schools, such as the draft lawThe government's efforts to protect children demonstrate our leaders' intention to resolutely commit our country to these necessary and urgent battles. The Church supports this intention. It has itself been engaged for several years in the pursuit of truth and mobilized in the fight against and prevention of sexual violence .
Nevertheless, certain articles of the proposed law, which will be debated on Monday in a public session of the National Assembly, call into question several fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of conscience, professional secrecy, academic freedom, and freedom of worship. This is why the Conference of Bishops of France is addressing parliamentarians on this matter and expressing its deep concern here.
