Long-Serving Catholic Priest Killed - RIP Father Youhanna Al-Amin in Sudan

Tragic Murder of Long-Serving Priest Father Youhanna Al-Amin in Sudan's Nuba Mountains

Father Youhanna Al-Amin, a dedicated parish priest who served the Kauda community in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains for over three decades, was murdered on June 19 alongside two others. Reportedly targeted for refusing to abandon his parishioners, local sources via Aid to the Church in Need suggest the killing was an act of revenge. Father Youhanna had recently reported the theft of parish-stored medicines intended for the local population.

The other two victims have been identified by the online newspaper Sudan Now as parish warehouse manager Yohanna and caretaker John Lama. Local witnesses attribute the crime to a faction of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N).

This triple homicide follows months of escalating tension. Since March, internal clashes between SPLM-N factions over land disputes and administrative boundaries in the Otoro area have displaced hundreds of civilians and worsened the local humanitarian crisis. While SPLM-N leadership accuses local dissenters of rebelling against their authority, community representatives counter that the movement is attempting to forcibly expropriate their land.

Context on the SPLM-N: Founded in 2011 following South Sudan's independence, the SPLM-N consists of Nuba fighters who remained in the north to fight government marginalization and secure land rights. In 2017, the group split into two main factions: the Abdelaziz al-Hilu faction (dominant in the Nuba Mountains) and the Malik Agar faction (active in the Blue Nile region).

  • The Incident: On June 19, Father Youhanna Al-Amin—parish priest in Kauda, Nuba Mountains for over 30 years—was murdered alongside warehouse manager Yohanna and caretaker John Lama.

  • The Motive: According to Aid to the Church in Need, the attack appears to be retaliation. Father Youhanna had recently exposed the theft of medical supplies meant for the local community.

Underlying Conflict Dynamics

  • Factional Violence: Internal SPLM-N clashes since March have displaced hundreds and devastated the local humanitarian situation.

  • Root Causes: The violence stems from long-standing land disputes and administrative boundary disagreements in the Otoro area. Local leaders accuse the SPLM-N of forced land expropriation, while the movement claims locals are rebelling against its authority.

  • SPLM-N Background: Formed in 2011 to fight the political exclusion and marginalization of non-Arabic populations, the movement split in 2017. The faction led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu controls the Nuba Mountains region where the murders took place.
