Vatican Announces Program for Pope Leo XIV’s June Consistory
The Holy See Press Office has published the schedule for the upcoming Extraordinary Consistory of Cardinals, scheduled for June 26–27. Preceding the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul, this gathering marks the second consistory of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate, following an initial meeting in January that drew 170 cardinal electors and non-electors.
The two-day event will focus on global conflicts, the current state of the Church, and implementing the Synod, emphasizing how the Church can foster peace through its language and actions. Operating under a "synodal" framework, the meetings will feature structured prayer, personal reflection, group discussions, and plenary sessions. To encourage open, fraternal dialogue, the Cardinals have been requested to maintain strict press confidentiality throughout the proceedings.
Structure and Schedule of the Four Sessions
The participants will be organized into 20 working groups: nine comprising cardinal electors who are Ordinaries (including Apostolic Nuncios) and eleven consisting of Roman Curia and non-elector cardinals. Each group will be led by a president and a secretary.
Friday, June 26
Morning: The Consistory opens with a Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica celebrated by Pope Leo XIV. Attendees will then gather in Paul VI Hall for the first session, featuring an address by Cardinal Dean Giovanni Battista Re and opening remarks from the Pope. Cardinal Grzegorz Ryś will lead a biblical meditation for the First Session, which addresses the theme: "In what kind of world are we called to proclaim the Gospel?"
Afternoon: The Second Session centers on "The culture of power and the civilization of love." Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández will introduce the topic, drawing from Chapter V of Magnifica humanitas.
Saturday, June 27
Morning: Following a morning Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica presided over by Cardinal Re, the Third Session will convene in Paul VI Hall. Titled "Building in the good: the worksites of our time," it will be introduced by Cardinal Stephen Brislin and will examine societal fractures and how the Church can support local communities.
Afternoon: The Fourth Session shifts to the New Synod Hall, focusing on "The path of implementing the Synod." Cardinal Mario Grech will introduce the discussion based on preparation documents for the 2027–2028 Synodal Assemblies. This final block will include a Q&A session, an open dialogue with Pope Leo XIV (with three-minute limits on interventions), and a concluding address by the Pope.
The Consistory will conclude with the singing of the Te Deum and a dinner with the Holy Father. On Monday, June 29, Pope Leo XIV will preside over the traditional Mass for the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul at St. Peter's Basilica.
