Pope Appoints Father Pier Luigi Stolfi as Moderator Curiae of the Diocese of Rome
VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV has appointed Father Pier Luigi Stolfi, parish priest of San Lino in Urbe and a respected expert in cultural heritage, as the new Moderator Curiae of the Diocese of Rome.
This newly created position serves as a "general director" for the Vicariate of Rome, consolidating operational and administrative responsibilities to relieve the operational burden on the Vice-Gerent and assist Cardinal Vicar Baldo Reina.
Key Responsibilities
As outlined in the recent motu proprio Confirma Fratres Tuos (published June 30), the Moderator Curiae will serve a renewable five-year term and is tasked with:
Assisting the Cardinal Vicar in the exercise of his functions.
Coordinating the various offices, administrative structures, and implementation of directives.
Supervising the Vicariate's personnel and ensuring the proper fulfillment of duties.
Profile: Father Pier Luigi Stolfi
Father Stolfi (age 56) brings extensive pastoral and administrative experience to this unprecedented role in the Roman Diocese.
Pastoral Leadership: Since 2020, he has served as the parish priest of San Lino in Urbe, a community of roughly 12,000 faithful in Rome's Pineta Sacchetti neighborhood.
Vicariate Expertise: He has a deep history within the Lateran Palace, having served as director of the Office for Religious Buildings (2017) and deputy director since 2008.
Additional Roles:
Head of the Sacred Art and Cultural Heritage section.
General Secretary of the Roman Society for the Preservation of the Faith and the Provision of New Churches.
Provost of the Lateran Palace.
Vice-Rector of the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary (2006).
Institutional Context and Reform
The introduction of the Moderator Curiae is a major structural update to the apostolic constitution In Ecclesiarum Communione—the framework used by Pope Francis three years ago to reform the Diocese of Rome.
An "Ancient" Proposal Realized While new to the Diocese of Rome, the concept of a Moderator Curiae has been discussed in church governance for years. It was notably proposed by Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio during the 2013 Conclave congregations as a way to bridge silos and coordinate administrative bodies. Pope Leo XIV has now adopted and applied this model directly to his own diocese.
