Former Ugandan Priest Sentenced to 21 Years for Murder
A suspended Ugandan Catholic priest has been sentenced to 21 years in prison following a fatal stabbing fueled by a monetary disagreement.
Former Father Dominic Alinga, of the Diocese of Moroto, pleaded guilty to the murder of Uganda Revenue Authority official John Bosco Ngorok and the attempted murder of a bystander. On July 23, High Court Justice Flavia Nabakooza in Entebbe handed down a 21-year sentence for the murder and a 10-year sentence for attempted murder, to be served concurrently. Alinga was also ordered to pay restitution to the surviving victim.
According to prosecutors, Alinga believed Ngorok was responsible for providing information that led to his secret suspension from the ministry by Bishop Damiano Guzzetti in July 2024. Weeks later, on August 2, 2024, Alinga met Ngorok in Entebbe and attacked him with a knife while traveling together. When local driver Moses Abigaba stepped in to help, Alinga struck both men with his car and fled.
Ngorok succumbed to his wounds, while Abigaba survived. After escaping to eastern Uganda, Alinga confessed to a fellow priest and turned himself in to law enforcement.
Uganda’s Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions noted that the case proves "criminal responsibility applies equally to all persons regardless of their social or religious status."
