BREAKING Person in Omaha Arrested After Threating to Do a Mass Shooting at a Catholic School, and Violence Against the Governor's Family, and Nuns

The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) confirmed the arrest of Ean Halstead, age 32, following a weeks-long investigation into terroristic threats that shook the local faithful but ultimately ended without bloodshed.

A Targeted Threat to the Faithful

The incident began on June 29 when the administration at Columbus Catholic Schools intercepted a deeply disturbing message sent through the school’s website. The communication contained explicit threats of violence directed at the school’s community— teaching and resident nuns, and young students—alongside threats to the family of Governor Pillen.

Recognizing the imminent danger to the religious and lay members of the school, administration officials immediately contacted law enforcement. State troopers rapidly traced the digital footprint to an Omaha address.

The initial attempt to contact Halstead on June 29 resulted in a tense, two-hour standoff at his Bedford Avenue apartment after he refused commands and barricaded himself inside. He was initially jailed for obstruction. Following a forensic digital investigation that directly linked Halstead's devices to the targeted threats against the Catholic institution, a new warrant was issued. On Friday, an NSP SWAT team safely took Halstead back into custody on felony charges of terroristic threats and destruction of evidence.

Gratitude for Protection and Law Enforcement

For Catholic families and parishioners, the news serves as a sobering reminder of the growing vulnerabilities facing religious institutions. However, Church and state leaders are emphasizing a message of resilience, gratitude, and a call for peace.

Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol, reassured families that the safety of religious and educational sanctuaries remains a paramount priority:

“Nebraska law enforcement takes threats against our schools seriously, and the Nebraska State Patrol will continue to use every resource available to protect students, staff, and our communities... We are thankful for a safe outcome for all involved.”

The Nebraska State Patrol has maintained close communication with Columbus Catholic Schools throughout the ordeal to ensure the physical security of the campus, its faculty, and the religious orders who serve there.

A Call to End Radicalized Rhetoric

The threats also hit close to home for the Governor's office. Dave Lopez, Chief of Staff to Governor Pillen, expressed deep gratitude for the swift protection of the First Family and the Catholic school network, while issuing a firm call for a return to civility.

“We have zero tolerance for political violence here in Nebraska, including threats to carry it out,” Lopez said, noting the dangerous cultural shift impacting communities. “The heated political rhetoric that too often leads to radicalization and violence must cool off.”

As the legal process moves forward, the Columbus Catholic community is pivoting to what it does best in times of trial: prayer. Parishioners are being asked to keep the targeted nuns, school staff, and the Governor's family in their prayers, offering intentions of protection, peace, and the conversion of heart for the individual responsible.

The investigation remains ongoing with the assistance of the Omaha Police Department.
