Vatican Hosts Global Leaders and Nobel Laureates at Historic AI Summit - Inspired by Pope Leo's Encyclical - at Borgo Laudato si’

Global Leaders and Nobel Laureates Convene in Rome to Tackle AI and Nuclear Risks

From July 14 to 16, the Vatican's Borgo Laudato si’ (located in the Pontifical Gardens of Castel Gandolfo) and Rome's Capitoline Hill are hosting the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear War.

Inspired by Pope Leo XIV’s Encyclical Magnifica humanitas—which advocates for safeguarding humanity in the digital era—this high-level, "Conclave"-style summit addresses growing geopolitical instability and the rapid rise of advanced technologies.

Key Participants

The assembly brings together over 200 of the world's most influential voices in peace, science, and technology, including:

  • 30 Nobel Laureates and former heads of state and government.

  • Representatives from 30 countries.

  • 20 Leading AI Pioneers from industry giants including OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Anthropic, and AARU.

  • Delegates from 30 Elite Universities, such as Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, Columbia, Princeton, UC Berkeley, Tsinghua, and the Collège de France.

Core Focus & Agenda

The three-day closed-door dialogues are focused on building a new global paradigm that balances technological innovation with ethical responsibility. Key areas of discussion include:

  • International Security: Mitigating the risks of nuclear escalation and autonomous weapons.

  • Tech Governance: Establishing ethical guidelines and digital protocols for emerging AI models.

  • Disarmament: Transitioning toward an economy structured around peace rather than conflict.

The Goal: The Rome Declaration

On July 16, the assembly will conclude with a solemn session at Rome's City Hall to present the Rome Declaration for a Disarmed and Disarming Peace in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, Nuclear and Autonomous Weapons, New Digital Protocols, and Emerging Models of Digital Development.

The Declaration's Mission: To establish a universal framework for AI governance that prioritizes human dignity, integral development, and international cooperation.
